it's *just stealing from the man*

This is complete myth.

The two clear largest areas of activity on the web are perversion and theft followed closely no doubt by various other 'unsavoury' activities that humanity gets up to when it deludes itself that nobody is watching.

This phenomenon of web traffic isn't perpetrated by 'them' it is the true mainstream activity of the net and represents human nature. Our human nature, it is us!

It's rare to encounter anybody on the net that would admit to engage in this kind of activity though which is strange given how popular these forms of traffic are.

We don't get our freedoms taken away by the 'Man' we give them away because over the millennia that is traditionally what we do.

First we deny what responsibilities we have in what happens on what started out here as being a completely free, untainted, agenda-less avenue of communication, the internet. Then because of this denial we defer to an authority who will sanitize this vehicle that surely doesn't represent us upright, moral folk who strangely become the majority despite web usage trends indicating the complete opposite.

Because of that willingness to deny who we really are because it affords us a warm cloak of righteousness we become happy to even pay a subscription for 'nicely' sanitized services that fit in with the myth we perpetrated in the first place.

Nobody minded what we did in the first place it was all experimental and what happened on the web was down to the conscience and responsibility of those that could participate in this strange new medium.  WE have made the internet what it is today THEY didn't.

We are too scared of freedom to handle it, kind of reminds me of a story of a couple individuals that hung out once in this cool mythical place called Eden.

When it comes to taking a bite of the 'forbidden' fruit nobody wants to put their hand up, and why should they of course it was the serpents fault.

Your writing matches my sceptic way of thinking, Jonbouy :o/
Like I mentioned in my post, when people can do things anonymously, they are not the same persons anymore. They can hardly admit to themselves what they're doing.

And of course, the actual criminals are another story.

A friend of mine works in the public feedback telephone of broadcasting company. The people who call at office hours
and talk person-to-person usually behave in a somewhat civilized manner even when they're angry. The phonecalls recorded outside office hours are for a great part totally unbelievable. You can hear middle aged people with an educated accent screaming all the genital synonyms they know for minutes - and worse.

I think many people don't know that when the most popular search words and sites of the net are listed by the service providers, they exclude the, well...I wonder how many...say, first 50
or 100, because they are all about sex, genitals and illegal downloads. Well..I'm not saying there's anything wrong with sex in itself, but you know what I mean.
The mental/moral/ethical development of the human race has really not followed the technical one.

+1 for your superb use of the English language - You explain yourself very well ;)

People who register on File Sharing sites to illegally upload, download (share) free albums, free software ~ most people do so knowing that it's against the law to use copyrighted material without permission.  Copyright notices are printed/displayed over and over all over the dang place, no judge is going to except an excuse of... oh sorry didn't know! LOL!!

Don't split-hairs over piracy, put it this way... piracy is sort of like stealing from the copyright owner(s), and piracy is a huge problem made ten-fold worse because the Internet is the most efficient method of mass distribution worldwide.

Yes it is pure theft, plain and simple.

But rather than any moral viewpoint that maybe prevalent (and lets face it morality conveniently changes over the centuries to suit the age) I choose to buy software that I know is otherwise freely available from any number of download sites, purely because the consequence of not doing so means it ceases to become available (FACT!), and I love my creative apps. The people that far cleverer than I that create them need to feed themselves and their families and frankly they'd be doing something else if people didn't buy the stuff.

I stopped buying very much commercial music back in the 80's as I lost interest in owning albums preferring to listen to live sources of music such as radio and TV and latterly non-commercial sources such as the songs forum here.  I don't own much recorded material save a few personal nostalgia archives that are bought and paid for.

I will openly admit to having cast the odd glance at the occasional beauty of the female form though, although nothing that would contribute to an exploitative market and besides I prefer an element of mystique left for the imagination in that department, in yer face material doesn't cut it for me.

For the musician, I think writing, TV, touring, branding and merchandising are going to be the major revenue streams from here on and not the recorded work itself.  I think I'd like to be wrong there though.

And the reason moshkiae approves of it is because of his well-documented on this forum wholesale distain for any commercial music.

I like this post... but somehow it makes me feel guilty of merely existing...

Blimey and I'm not even a Catholic...

I'm merely pointing out the human condition in that we are all fallible but also gifted in that we know what jars with our individual conscience, we all, or at least all have a version of knowing right from wrong.

I'm not calling into question the integrity (or lack thereof) of any individual present merely pointing out the innocence of Eden present when the internet first connected the initial 2 nerds. (Wasn't one of them Al Gore?)

You and I may not be instrumental in the seedier activity on the internet but speaking for myself I'm still 'responsible' as an adult and yet largely accept what goes on around that internet.

Governments say we need new laws for the new crimes on the internet but we already have these laws against theft, fraud, deception and 'indecency'.

Like Randy pointed out if you set up a bricks and mortar stall to sell stolen goods you'd get shut down within a week so why not 'anonymous' servers that operate in the same way?  Sure many of the operations are offshore but customs would turn them back at the borders if they were trying to bring this stuff in on a boat.

You get the picture.

None of us need more legislation but it is our responsibility to uphold the law as it already exists in our respective territories.  I guess I'm trying to say there ain't no point in bleating about 'them' if we turn a blind eye to that we wouldn't accept in our society just because it is on the internet.

It's about this point in the discussion, when various family members I've known would mutter things like, "It's time to thin the herd", and "Where's my shotgun?".  Funny thing, though.  They usually looked at me, licked their lips, and grinned when they said it.

People are who they are.  In order to fit into our desired role in society, we pretend to be better than we are.  To quote Lord John Whorfin, "Character is a what you are in the dark!" The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai - Across the 8th Dimension.

I think there are 2 ideas here, and the problem as I see it is sometimes people mix them together inappropriately:

1. Stealing is bad/wrong/illegal. This should be obvious, but as I like to say, "One of the things that separates people from animals is our ability to rationalize our own behavior".

2. We need this particular law to prevent stealing. This is where things go astray. There are laws against stealing. But they are routinely unenforced, because that would cost money, and politicians don't like to spend money on law enforcement if it doesn't involve posing for pictures with cops right before an election. So instead of enforcing existing laws, new laws are "needed" to solve the problem.

The fact that these laws are designed to primarily benefit a small number of people at the expense of free expression, due process, etc. is not a concern to the self-interested people paying for the new laws to be enacted.

One point I was making is that many people are acting as if it's ok to steal as long as they pay for the gas in the get a way car.

And as long as they buy a car the same as the one they 'test drove' or alternatively they just dump or destroy it?

Why couldn't it have been a pomegranate?

Has anyone ever used a pomegranate as an effective getaway vehicle? What gas does it use grenadine syrup?

Ahh, I see what I did there, I confused the getaway car with the booty.

No, Mike ... I've had written material stolen by Hollywood ... but using "their" lawyers and security" is a ****ing illusion ... and you think you are being protected, when in fact they only protect themselves and steal from others.

If you are an "insider" you might have a point ... but if you are an outsider ... screw you, is the theme. And that goes also for the same people that actually create all the money for those RIAA folks ... the buy-ing public.

If you want to cheat and rob someone, at least be honest, instead of creating a lie and intentionally execute people in public to show that you are right ... of course, the whole thing is mute when they plant an audience, show it on tv and you applaud!

When, will the hippocrisy end? It's not gonna happen with advertising! It's gonna happen with results and honesty.

And no, I do not approve of illegal activities and do not have any software unpaid for on my computer. A couple of freebie VST's is about it, and 2 of them I actually made a donation because they deserved the $20 bux each.

Gosh ... life after 60 ... opinions still stick! And Strummie is the same ... and the accusations are the same!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Oh yeah. One of my all time favorites.

There's nothin' to know. You have an idea, you write down what you wanna say. Then you get somebody to add in the commas and sh!t where they belong, if you aren't positive yourself. Maybe fix up the spelling where you have some tricky words . . . although I've seen scripts where I know words weren't spelled right and there was hardly any commas in it at all. So I don't think it's too important. Anyway, you come to the last page you write in 'Fade out' and that's the end, you're done.

They are able to look at everything on your computer.

So they know the real truth 'bout Mooch and Me?

OMG!!!!

They will be bored to tears in not time flat.

Mooch: I'm watching TV and eating Bon-Bons
Bapu: OK, I gotta go the market to get some eggs.
Mooch: OK Billy <chuckles>, I mean Bapu, TTYL.
Bapu: Sure.

That's not it at all

This is way more acurate.

Mooch: I am watching TV and eating Bon-Bons still no "real" employment

Bapu: Ok You want to play drums on this one song here?

Mooch: I am not cofident in my drumming I am average. How about I play bass?

Bapu: No. I am playing bass.

Mooch: Yeah but... (bapu interupts)

Bapu: I am an epic bass player of all time and especially epic compared to the drabble I hear people discuss in the coffee house. DO YOU UNDERSTAND??? I AM THE BASS PLAYER ON THIS SONG? I MEAN WHAT PART DON'T YOU GET. The " IAM" The "THE" The "BASS" or the "PLAYER"........ I AM THE BASS PLAYER!!!!!!!

Mooch: (Scratching his self and grabs another unemplyment bon-bon) Yeah Ok Bapu. I have a guy named Bob who is an excellent drummer. I can have him play it if you want?

Bapu: Will you send me the midi file after he records it?

Mooch: N0. After he records it on my v-drums...you have to.... guess what he played... and program the midi yourself

Bapu: Well...ummm Mooch?

Mooch: Your stupid bapu! Why Wouldnt I send you the midi he just played on my excellent V-drums. How else would you get the drum part?

Bapu. Well you could have just sent me the Audio

Mooch: No Bapu. I knew you would want to tweak the drum sound using an unispired drum soft sythn forcing me to direct you to the correct one...as we've done in the past. I KNOW YOU'RE GAME.

Bapu: Make sure your bob drummer guy plays in time.

Mooch: (shakes head and starts to cry) Good Bye Bapu

Bapu: Bye stupid face
