Website offering Windows 7 upgrade for an excellent price.. too good to be true?
I'm about to turn my XP machine into a dual-boot setup. I'm looking to get the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade. This site offers it for an amazing price: http://www.wholesaleretai...professional-upgrade/# Too good to be true? Should I just get it off another more reputable site which would be $50 more expensive? Please advise.. Thanks in advance!

Only get the upgrade if you are replacing an existing installation of XP or Vista. The site appears legit as far as I can tell. I would be more suspicious if they were offering downloads rather than boxed versions

^ Thanks for the words! I'm under the impression that even if I wanted to replace my existing installation of XP with Windows 7, I would have to completely uninstall XP prior to installing Win7 anyway... I heard that if I have the serial # & some other information about my purchased copy of XP, that I would be good for the upgrade.. I think I'll hit up Microsoft customer support to make sure tho..

It reminds me of those 1000's of emails I used to receive about buying cheap software. I suspect the boxed versions are chinese made illegal copies. It is fairly easy to calculate the algorythm for the "serial number/product key" for any software, and most of these copies will likely work. But that doesn't make them legal. I suggest you wait a month and see if the site is still up edit: Or call Microsoft and ask them if the site is real!

Just got off the phone with Microsoft support - not as bad of an experience as I thought it would've been lol.. The lady basically said I'd be good to go if I wanted to install Win7 on another partition or hard drive, but that I would need to call customer service if I had an issue with the activation key...

Well, at least it's not in China. The server (fw7.bigcommerce.com) is in the U.S. but the IP is registered to a company in Australia. Could be legit.

Just out of curiosity (and procrastination) I did some digging on wholesaleretail.com and came up with: the domain was bought in July (through namecheap.com) and only a 1 year term??? long-term business plan? There are no on-line reviews yet at big review sites like bizrate, as in bizrate says yes the site exists and no one has said anything about it yet. Actually, I don't see much of anybody's site except google is referencing this site. The physical business address in google maps is, well, shall we say, tumbleweedish. Maybe google is wrong, maybe..... One search site's keyword summation for the site in question: wholesale, wholesalers, china wholesale, wholesale china, wholesale products, wholesale from china, buy wholesale, chinese wholesalers, china wholesalers, dropship. I'm just, as they say, sayin'. (and my procrastination time has expired.) Edit note: I typed this message before you placed your order, not trying to be a party-pooper. I trust your order will go well.

czyky The physical business address in google maps is, well, shall we say, tumbleweedish. Maybe google is wrong... Googlemaps is always out-of-date, so it would be optimistic to expect to find something there that has only been present since July. Actually any published map data is always out-of-date. I'm suspicious about the China thing though.

FWIW - I've always had good response from MS customer service when is comes to the OS. I recently bought the 3in1 Home Premium Upgrade and had only used one install on my DAW. I purchased a used PC for my daughter that had XP but when I delivered it to her (out of state) the hard drive fried and I was without a disc or restore option so I decided to use one of my other 2 Win7 installs but didn't have the discs with me. I bought a new drive, downloaded a Win7 ISO online, loaded it on a new HD, and called the to activate. Had a little hiccup because it was an upgrade but they passed me on to someone who allowed me to use the clean install. 20 minutes later, it is activated and rolling ever since.

Obfuscated whois... and that's a big no-no when dealing with commercial web sites. I don't draw any conclusions at this point, but I would by nature avoid it anyways.

You can't "upgrade" a Windows XP to Win 7. You have to do a complete new install. You can "upgrade" Vista to Win 7. You can buy an OEM Version which is cheaper than a full Retail version. The OEM version is only (legally) for the PC it's installed on. If you change motherboards or want to install it on a different PC you are supposed to get a new copy. I have an OEM version and had a motherboard failure. The motherboard, an Intel under warranty was replaced by Intel with an exact replacement. I still had to jump through hoops with Microsoft to get Win 7 reactivated as it sensed the motherboard replacement as a "different" PC.

Lastly - I got an email from Newegg & they got Win7 Pro on sale for 117.99. http://www.newegg.com/Pro...dex-_-index-_-32116992 Enter promo code: EMCYTZT764 Free shipping & that promo code is good for today only... So if you're looking to make the jump into Win7 but don't trust the site I ordered my copy from - then give Newegg a try!
