Weird SD3 Behavior

Creating a drum track with Session Drummer 3.  Entering snare hits (D2) widely spaced (on the back-beats).  Sonar randomly does not play some of the snare hits.  Oddly, it misses different ones at different times.  For example, it might fail to play the fourth snare hit.  I back it up and try again and it might miss the second or fifth one.

This has happened on a couple of projects.

Ideas?

    Howdy, Konradh

Sounds like you need to up the i/o buffer size on the Advanced tab on the Audio Options window.  When it's too small, you can get missed notes like that.  Try 512.  There are times when I've even had mine up to 1024.  Try settings in increments like that.  256, 512, 1024.

But it's likely that all your snares will be triggered if you bounce your SD MIDI track to audio, even with your present settings. That's not a bad practice anyway, so you'll have audio to work with during your final mix.  I grin and bear it when soft synths aren't playing back perfectly before I've bounced to tracks.

    yeah almost I'd say..
you need to adjust the midi-buffers.. and they are hidden in the "Preferences"-"Midi"-"Playback and Recording" menu.
    default at 500 ms.
I have set mine to 1200ms to get a constant midi playback..
Some plugins add a high latency, thats why it's necessary to make those adjustments.

The buffers Randy is talking about are for your harddrive(s),..

Really appreciate it, guys.  Was going to bounce all the soft synths eventually but was freaked out by the odd behavior during arranging (which is where I spend most of my time).

I will check out the buffer size.  Thanks again.

By the way, having come up on Linn Drum Computers and the like, I was never into trashy drums, but the SD3 and the add-on kits I bought have a few slightly trashy and ringy acoustic sounds that I am really starting to like.  They give tracks an underground-club-from-the-60s feel.

Thank you Frank - You're absolutely right.  Had me buffers mixed up.  I'm often juggling the settings in both places as my projects increase in size, needing more room for both audio playback and MIDI playback, it's like they've become one big Buffer thing to me.  Thanks for the needed correction.  You should be good to go on this now, Konradh.

Wow.  Just checked Preferences: MIDI Playback buffer was only at 250.  I changed it to 500 and will see how it goes...
