Weird notes that "aren't there"

Anyone ever hear of this one before? I am hearing notes that are not there. I have a melody on violins, which is playing, but there are no notes in staff view or event list. In other words, nothing to indicate the notes actually exist. Yet they play. In Console view, I can see that it is indeed the violins playing. The Play synth also shows that they are playing. This is a real problem, because the rest of the way in this piece,  there are no notes shown for the violins, when they have already been composed and entered (I am revising the piece). Am I in the Twilight Zone, or is there an earthly explanation for this weird behavior?

This must surely be a disconnect between what you're looking at and what you're hearing.

In Staff View & Event List View - make sure you have the correct track visible - i.e. the MIDI track.

Check the PRV to see what's going on, again, make sure you view the MIDI track

What can you see in Track View? If you solo the violin track, does it still play?
If you mute it does it go away?

What synth are you using to generate your note data?

Bonus post count day... I thought they fixed that bug ( forum software, not X3)

Best way to find this is to solo each track.

There's no prize once you catch up to bapu, Colin! That's why I dropped out of the competition.

As for the phantom notes, we can start with the assumption that the sampler isn't just making sound on its own, that it is being instructed to make sound somewhere. I can think of a few possible explanations.

I'd start by muting the MIDI track that's driving the synth/sampler. If the notes go away, then there is some MIDI data lurking in there and you may need to refer to the event list to find it. If the notes persist, then they're coming from another track, in which case it's probably a routing issue. Keep muting MIDI tracks until they cease.

If you've muted every MIDI track and still hear the notes, then you are indeed in the twilight zone. Especially if you discover that your computer is unplugged and your home was built atop an ancient burial ground.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Solved! I went to Cakewalk Help and checked under "hidden." Nothing, but under "Tracks" I saw "hide tracks." So I figured that somehow the track had gotten hidden. I pressed M on keyboard as instructed, and up came track manager. Sure enough, the phantom track was there, but it's box was unchecked. So I checked it, and voila! Not sure how it got hidden, but in any case it's solved. This was really puzzling. I did all the suggestions, such as muting, soloing etc. As a bonus, I now know why the violins were so loud, and nothing I could would tone them down. There were two identical tracks playing!

I had opened a project in X1 last year for grins. Messed with a couple of things, and saved to a new name.

A month later I opened the project in 8.5.3 and could not figger why the track and bus volumes were weird.

ALL the envelopes were hidden. Was way confused. Drank more beer, and ruminated, and finally opened a previous version of the project and all was happy.

     And drank more beer.
