Weirdest problem I ever saw...besides ME. LOL! *SOLVED*
Hi guys, I posted this in the 8.5 forum for some odd reason (thanks Tim lol) and got a little help from Jonesey, bitflipper and Tim. I figured I'd post it here in case any of you have any ideas for me. I'll post the question as well as the answers from the others so you'll be up to snuff. Danny: I got the weirdest problem all of a sudden and for the life of me can't figure this one out. I have a project running in X1. It plays great, everything is perfect...no crashes, no weird anomalies. The weird part is, when I try to export the audio, my piano and my strings will not export. They are physically playing in the projec and sent to the master bus. When I export the project, everything plays in the file except my piano and my strings. Ever seen anything like this? I've checked everything I can think of and this just will not export with those two instruments in the song. Yet if I export them individually, they export. They just will not export in this project. I tried to freeze them and then bounced...no dice. They play in the project but just won't export. I'm using the Cakewalk SI strings and 2 versions of Kontakt. The one with the piano won't export in the song, yet the one I'm using for some special effects exports. What am I missing? I gotta export this mix for a client and should have been done an hour ago. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Danny: Quick update...this is so weird! If I export the project anywhere but from the very beginning, the strings and piano are in the export. They just won't trigger from the beggining while exporting...yet they play in the project from start to finish. I'm out of ideas. Jonesey: Hmm. Not sure what to say Danny - I know you won't be guilty of the usual stuff, like routing/export options/selection range etc. The only thing I can suggest is a workaround for your client. If they export individually ok, and the rest of the mix also exports ok, why not just combine the 2 in another project? Are they set up as split Midi/Audio or Simple Instrument Tracks? Whichever it is, set it to the other option & try again. What happens if you do an audible bounce? bitflipper: Try doing a slip-edit on the front of those MIDI tracks, moving the "start" forward in time up to just before the first notes in the tracks. Danny: Thanks Jonesey and bit. Not sure what the deal with this is. I never in my life saw anything like it. Yeah all the usual stuff is accounted for Jonesey. I went over everything as carefully as possible there. I'm using instrument tracks. Bit: That was already done as I always keep my projects clean and slip edited to get rid of space. I don't know how the thing works in the project and doesn't export. I even tried that "what you hear" preset as well as audible bounce and it still didn't work. However, if I export right in the middle of the project, they show up every time. It's so weird! Freeze didn't work, a new AUD.ini didn't work but bounce to tracks did. There's something goofy on the outputs of those synths somewhere but for the life of me I can't find it. I figured if freeze didn't work, bounce to tracks wouldn't...but it did. I even tried to recreate the synth and tried "replace" with the same synth. Still no dice. Something may have gotten corrupt somewhere...but this is definitely something I never encountered before. Ok wait...I did sort of come across something similar....you guys may be able to help me remember. LOL! Years ago I had a client send me a project with a drum track that would not play unless you turned the enable/disable button off and on while project was playing. This would get you one pass through and then you'd have to do it again to hear the drums. I sent the project to Willy Jones and he said he had to mess with midi filters to remedy the problem. I don't remember exactly what he did because it was so long ago. He also fixed it for me and sent me the cwp. of the project so I never actually fixed it myself. But this was a similar problem. Could any of this have to do with midi filter assignments? If so, which ones? Thanks guys, really appreciate this. At least I got the thing working...but I would still rather not have to bounce those two tracks. Tim asked what types of tracks were created for the synths The tracks are midi VSTi instrument tracks. You know, the all in one that gives you tabs for midi and audio at the bottm left of inspector. Thanks again. -Danny

Bounce the synths to audio (not freeze).

I've had this happen a few times. I re-instanced the offending synths to fix it but I never found the cause.

If you have any midi fx on the midi track such as humanize, I found that it helps to insert "dummy" notes at the beginning of the track. When I say "dummy" notes, I mean notes that are out of the range of the instrument, non-sounding notes, like a C10. Just a thought.

Danny Ive had it with SD3 lots until I figured out my prob How are you selecting the tracks and exporting them? For me to get around the intermittent problem of things NOT exporting (Sometimes they would, sometimes maybe 1 or 2 tracks might, etc...) I make sure I select all tracks by Dragging down the Track Numbers in Track View Then when exporting I make sure the "ALL" is selected when doing Wave Files. Just curious on your process My Previous problematic way of doing it was to unselect all or Lasso all tracks/clips and then export. Worked fine for Audio Tracks but midi, soft synths were all over the place and never knew if they would go or not

Thanks again. -Danny I think you mean "simple instrument tracks" right? I had that problem too. Converted them to "insert synth" tracks (with a folder) and the problem went away. Went through this problem about 6 months ago and everyone said "simple instrument traclks have problems, don't use them".

Maybe something is selected/highlighted somewhere? Try edit>select>none. Then try exporting Good luck!

I think the SIT might be the cause. They definitely have some strange behaviour sometimes. The only other thing that springs to mind is that you have a MIDI CC perhaps #7 at the very front of the MIDI tracks that for some reason isn't being read at playback but is at export. I think that's probably stabbing in the dark a bit though.

Tim: thanks, yeah that's what I was doing. I still shouldn't have had to do that. But it worked to get me by. Gustabo: thanks...tried that, no luck. Incidentally, what are you using for humanizing? Vintage: tried that too...it just laughed at me. lol. Thanks for the suggestion. Mike: yeah tried all that stuff too, thanks. No dice. When I export, this is how I've always done it with every cake product. I hilite all the tracks I want to export via track number in track view. Hold ctrl and left click those I may not want to export. From there I don't have to really touch a thing in the export options. Whatever opens with the export options will be disregarded unless I touch something here. I just select wav or mp3 and press ok. I did try everything here though just to be sure. Epic fail every time. Scott: yeah, tried it thanks. The good thing about that is it would show me right off that bat that the audio wouldn't be included. This also helped me to try exporting at different points to see when things would work and when they wouldn't. I went through this whole song about a million times trying all different points because the darn synths would work as long as I didn't start the project from 0:00! So it was frustrating me to no end. Yet real playback in the project and everything was perfect! Ed: DING DING DING DING DING DING!!!!!!! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!! (hugs you real tight and manly making sure our torsos don't touch lol) That was it brother!!! Thank you so much for that! You know, for years I have always used a midi for midi, audio for audio and synths. I made a video for a client a few weeks ago and he says "dude, you're so 2000 and legacy. You do know we have Instrument tracks now where they are all in one right?" So I said "yeah, but I'm just so used to doing it the way I do it." So though I have experimented with instrument tracks before, this was the first time in my life that I have used one in a project. Never again. Great catch Ed....I thought for sure I was gonna be stuck boucing these tracks...whew! I owe ya one buddy! (hugs one more time because I wanna!) Karl: Yep, that was it. I'll have to check the cc 7 thing. That's worth a stab in my opinion if it helps someone else diwn the road, thanks. I had a problem like that with one of the NI drum modules. The darned snare drum wouldn't trigger. We found out it had something to do with cc 16 hosing the entire thing. I used the midi filter, killed 16 and bang...the snare drum played. Total fix was to shut down cc 16 from my drum brain which fixed things permanently. It ain't like cc 16 was doing anything anyway. LOL! Credit to Patrick from NI support for that one...he's the only dude I ever got from NI that had a clue that didn't respond to me using scripts. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions everyone....I really appreciate them! :) -Danny

In my 18 months of Sonar DAW/computer use,Iv'e used "simple instrument tracks" for an export, with no problem,in fact its how I export my SSD4 drums always,so I hope this weirdness doesn't start happening, but threads like this can be very educational, though when you guys start talking "controller no's" thats where I have ZERO idea.....anyway,glad you got it sorted Danny Bob

soens: Yeah, definitely X1 as I haven't put X2 on my recording systems yet. I'm waiting for the next patch to come out before I do that. I've never had a problem with X1 other than when it first came out. After the first two main patches, it was pretty fixed for me. By the last patch it was flawless for how I use it. Bob: Yeah I never used them until now. What's weird is, when the project first got completed as far as my "work" done to it, I exported a little snippet of it for the client and it worked perfectly. As I did more work, that's when I noticed the problem. There were other synths in the project too, but only 2 of them were in simple instrument track format. I have bongo's, harp, assorted specials going on....but they are all set up as a instrument templates or one midi, one audio. The controller stuff we're talking about has to do with continuous controll messages which you can either manually put in, or if you have a controller they will do certain enhancements to the midi data. For example, if you have V-Drums, a hi-hat pedal counts as an expression and puts out a control number in the midi data. Or a pitch wheel on a keyboard..choked cymbal. Stuff like that gives you added control options and sometimes, they can even mess things up. Tim: No automation at all. Olpal: Ok, you have me beat there. LOL! :) -Danny

Cheers Bob You shouldn't have to worry about that though if you don't use any expression control or anything that would require some sort of continuous control. You'll get it with velocity changes etc, but for the most part, you shouldn't see any problems with this sort of thing unless you're getting into midi automation or manually drawing things into your midi tracks using even list etc. It's always good to know about midi, but if you're not using it to that extent, you will probably never run into any problems where the cc's could be an issue for you. :) -Danny

I didn't use Sonar X1 because I jumped from Sonar 8.5.3 to Sonar X2. I got in on the upgrade offer of getting Sonar X2 for free. I never did use Sonar X1 even though it's installed. Sonar X2 has been very stable other than a few annoyances I am able to get my work done mostly without having to think about the DAW. I really like X2. Just hope they get the buggies worked out. I gave instrument tracks a try because I *thought* it would tidy up the TV since that is where I spend 99% of my time and quickly dumped the idea because I could not get them to put out sound even when trying to play a synth. I fiddled with them trying this that and the other thing and could not get them to work so I finally dumped the idea of using them. It was really annoying because everything was routed to where it was supposed to go and nothin... No big deal since I've worked with the separate audio midi track since Sonar 2XL. Like I said I hope CW doesn't take the old way away... Btw, Noel hinted that the first update was going to be a big one with some new and/or improved features... I would be super de duperly happy if they just get the current ones working.
