Well lookeydat... I dun did learned somethin' new about intertubin'...

Highlight some text, right click over text and select "Search Google for...".

Pops the search in a new tab. At least in Firefox anyway but I'm guessing the same thing would happen in Chrome.

That's a time saver since many searches I do are about people, events, concepts or words I've never heard of before. Now I don't have to open a tab and copy/pasta or type the thingie I'm lookin' for.

Shirley this isn't some mystic secret to many of you but damn... I like that, and after over a decade of surfin' the webz I just found out about it today. Kewl.

I'm assuming if I changed my default search engine it would search that instead of teh googley moogleys. Haven't tried that yet.

Now back to your usual CH silliness.

It works in Chrome too Beeps.

Incidentally, in IE10, selecting/highlighting text actually copies it directly into the search window if you use Google Toolbar:

Good to know. Thing is I got booted out of school when I was... well too young for it to be legal for them to boot me out of school but the truancy officer basically said "We want you gone so if you and yer mum don't say anything we won't". Loved learning but cripes those buggers weren't teaching me much of anything (except how to despise the system).

So these days whut with the intertubeys and all I try to fill in the gaps as much as possible on my own and do so with great gusto. Anything that makes that easier for me is, as Billy 'O' the Bayou would say... Brylliant!

However I am disappointed, Steve. I was hoping you would have a visible tab open in your screencap of a sheep shagging fetish site.

Please try to do better next time.

Here's a completely pointless tip that you'll never use. When typing a URL in the URL bar, you can hit CTRL + enter instead of typing .com.

One of my favorite Windows tips is pressing Windows key + X to bring up a very handy menu that has a lot of very handy Windows features (like Device Manager, Network Connections, Programs & Features, System etc). It used to include the Control Panel as well, but I guess MS have removed it for some typically bizarro reason.

It's there only it's called "Settings" now (towards the bottom).

I like Windows Key + L for a quick lock of the computer.

Since I have to often put clients on a work domain, I also like the Windows + Pause combination to see the system properties.

I like the Windows+Pause. That will be handy.

I found one a while back that I like as well. CTRL+Shift+Esc brings up the task manager.

A buddy of mine used to work in a computer shop many moons ago. He had a story about some guy who snagged one of those "Try AOL Free for a Month" promo discs from a standee in their shop (for those who don't remember that old school shiz the disc was basically a trial for AOL that let you use their online service/portal in hopes you'd sign up but of course you still actually had to have a modem and whatnot to connect).

Dude comes back all ticked off saying "The internet isn't on this disc!!". He thought he could surf the web just with that disc. No connection to any networks. Just plop it in the CD drive and start intertoobin'.

*facepalm*

My favorite was a story I heard from a tech guy years and years ago who'd gotten an inquiry from a teacher. Apparently this teacher had decided that it would be more helpful to the kids if the keys were arranged in alphabetical order, so she'd taken them off and rearranged them herself. To her surprise, they were still coming out as QWERTY and she wanted to know where she was going wrong.

I had a lady call one evening saying she couldn't get her computer to work right and complained the mouse kept rolling around on the floor making it hard for her to use it. It turned out that she was trying to use the mouse like the pedals of a dictaphone machine. I'm guessing she lied about having computer experience. I let her know the mouse is to be operated by hand and to contact her supervisor. We never heard from her again.

One time back then I used to manage the Tech. Support team and we had a few fun terms like:
  • It was a 502 (the police code for a DUI)
  • A dysfunctional user incident (what WE called a DUI)
  • A problem between the keyboard and the chair
