Well...now I'VE been robbed!

Or actually burgled is a more appropriate term!

Guess I did not heed Dave's advice!  I was reading his story as it unfolded and all the crap he had to go through...and all the time thinking "yeah, I need to install security cameras and yeah, I need to record my serial numbers on my equipment..."

lazy arse didn't do it tho!

we left about 5:30pm to go to a movie (Independence Day Resurrection) and after we got out, we went to meet family in a parking lot on a hill overlooking the city for fireworks.  after the fireworks, we got home about 11pm to notice there were lights on in the house and we didn't think we left lights on in the house!

they damaged more than they stole, but it really could have been MUCH worse than it was!  they threw a rock through a back window and literally picked up our 55" TV and just dragged it and all the cords ripping them out of walls and sockets and connections to the DVD player and stereo system - ripping plaster from the ethernet and cable connections!

found my DAW on it's side and my monitors laying face down in the hallway where they dragged them and finally dropped them.

all of our bedroom drawers were gone through.  they left my 2 class rings (which are worth a little, I would think) and left my Social Security card lying on the floor, didn't even go into my wife's closet where her jewelry is.

My acoustic guitar was laying in the living room floor, face down, but otherwise unharmed.

but they did steal ONE of my keyboards and left the other 4 alone!  I had one of them in a gig bag standing up in the hallway next to my studio room and they didn't touch it!  it's the one I take to church every week to gig with!  but my 88 key weighted Casio stage piano (cost me $750!) they stole!  they did NOT take my Hammond Organ!!!!  of course it weighs 50 pounds, but they didn't even try!  it's still undisturbed sitting on the keyboard stand in my studio!

they stole my vocal mic I've had for years and they don't make any more of them!  Shure KSM-44.  That's probably what I'll miss the most!

not sure of anything else - but I had a lot of gear in my studio that they left behind and didn't even touch.  a p-solo preamp, a roland duo-capture, a MOTU MKIII Ultralite, two mackie mixers, a keyboard amp, several rack pieces.

didn't touch my camera gear either.  I figure it was probably a kid.  had small shoes the police and I found footprints in the dust on the back porch.

Normally we put Scooby in the back yard when we're away and he probably would have barked at them, but since it was 4th of July we put him in his bed and zipped him in.  poor boy was in our bedroom while they were ransacking our drawers in the bedroom and master bath!  but he was unharmed, at least.  if he had been out, they might have hurt him.

so they didn't wipe me out like they did Dave (bitflipper) but they still VIOLATED me and still have taken some things which I need for recording.  but it's just stuff!  we're safe and OK.

I'll be ordering that security system I've been procrastinating ever since reading about Dave's woes and I'll be recording serial numbers of my more prized keyboards as well as contacting insurance and a glazier tomorrow!!!

Sorry to hear about it!  Sounds like an amateur hit (or they weren't sure how long you'd be gone and rushed things).  Hope the recovery is smooth!

At least they didn't get unreplaceable items like what happened to Dave and I'm assuming that all becan was left intact or else there would be a hot chase on right now!

Getting that security system is definitely a good idea since these asshats now know what you have.

Yep...neighborhood punks. Not pros.

Everyone needs to have some sort of security system and write down those numbers...... video tape the stuff you have because without it, it's your word against the insurance co.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I almost always record the serials but I have found those are pretty much useless. Of the things that I have had stolen, in which I had the serials, there has never been anything recovered nor anyone prosecuted. The cops even acted like they were wasting their time taking them down. I was getting sighs and eye rolls as I gave them the serials.

Unless they 'move you out' kinda like they did with bit, I find it strange what they decide to take. I'm guessing they just try to take what they can carry and easily sell. I have been broken into a couple of times. The TV and monitors were always gone. The CD's and DVD's were wiped out. But then the stuff they took doesn't make much sense. Once I had my main lighting console out (64ch 2 scene NSI memory controller worth about $3k) but luckily(?) they took a crappy 16ch controller, that I got from ebay, that had knobs missing and looked like hell from years of road rash. <shrugs>

Hi,

Goodness ... this is getting scary, and crazy.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

After reading your post earlier today on FB, I left to run some errands.
When I returned, the screen door was open, and I'm pretty sure I closed it when I left.
My first thought was, "Oh, no! They got me, too".
Thank goodness that wasn't the case. I still don't know why the door was open.
I'm never leaving the house again.

Re: Well...now I'VE been robbed! 2016/07/05 12:16:20 (permalink)
The cops who showed up seemed genuinely interested in me having serial numbers so they could turn them into the system which pawn shops here have to report the equipment to.  also, pawn shops here require picture ID for pawning anything.

they also took pictures of shoe prints in the dirt on the back porch and in the house where the perp was.  (looks like a single person in the house - could have been one waiting in the car.

I've already gotten a call back from a police officer asking if there was anything I needed to add to the report.

SO FAR they seem interested in catching them.

problem tho I only have a serial number for 1 of the 3 big ticket items they took.

and I have a $1700 deductible.  ouch.

So sorry to hear this. Sounds like sloppy opportunists, and if this is a habit for them I suspect those might be the fraction that actually gets caught.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Sorry to hear about this Beagle.  I'm convinced serial numbers and pawn shops are the union that gets them caught the most.  Maybe that one serial will be just enough.  I sure hope so.

Bummer dude.  We're planning a trip for next ... some day.  My current plan is to take all hard drives in a fire box.  I don't know what to do with guitars/amps and other big stuff.  I'll make damn sure I have serial numbers and photos before we go for sure.  And maybe I'll update my policy to zero deductible, then change it back when we return.  I think I'll add some surveillance cameras that save to a cloud also.

You guys are making me not want to leave home.

The good thing is I live in the boonies, have a rep for being armed and dangerous and for having electronic surveillance.  Locals stay away and non-locals aren't likely to stumble upon the place.

Wow, Tom!  $5k is about all they took and damaged this time, I think!

we JUST got back from vacation a little over a week ago and no one really came by to check on the house.  our dog stayed with relatives a few miles away and we were gone for a week!  but they didn't do anything then - they came LAST NIGHT!

grr...  the stuff they took and broke wasn't much but it just burns me that people do stuff like this.  it was probably a kid or very small person because they came in through the broken window and the window wasn't broken all the way out - very small opening after they threw the rock through it.  and no blood. and very small shoe imprints in the dust, either a kid or a young girl.

Re: Well...now I'VE been robbed! 2016/07/05 16:11:52 (permalink)
Reece - so sorry to hear this - living in Cape Town South Africa for much of the year, one gets very hyper about security - my house has high walls, very powerful electric fence, beams to trigger alarm then security alarms each window and door, plastic bars on each opening window, anti smash film on all non opening windows, cameras  etc oh and guaranteed 2 minute armed response which I think is the biggest deterrent of all - and these guys don't muck around, so can and do shoot if necessary. Even though crime is high, never had an issue personally, so I do think these days one does need to take whatever precautions one can to protect yourself and your possessions
Hope they catch the thieves and you get all you stuff back

Wow. I'm very sorry to hear about this, Reece. Humans should not be allowed out in public.

If their assault on your home is any indication of their skills, they will hopefully be caught soon. I can't imagine that criminal masterminds like these would roam free for too long. Replacing the stuff doesn't lessen the emotional impact of having someone break into your home.

The irony, isn't it? Because of all the criminals on the streets, honest people are the ones who end up living in "prisons".

Whether it's because they take what's ours or to protect ourselves or to prosecute them and keep them in jail - we ALWAYS pay for those parasites, one way or another.

Reece, man, I'm so sorry for you. I hope they manage to find the scums who did it and your stuff.

I took out an instruments rider on my insurance, about 5 years ago. I'm covered for about 10k in instruments, if stolen. I left the computers and electronics on the home owners insurance.

We need to use the security system more often, we don't always remember to activate it when we leave the house. Jake, stays in the house 100% of the time when we are away. At 85 lbs, hopefully he is a good back up system.

Sorry to hear this. Because of Bits loss I installed cameras all over my house. I am in the process of installing an alarm system. There was a time you could go to sleep with your doors unlocked. Never again I'm afraid. The people in my old neighborhood in Newark NJ now have gates around the houses and bars on the windows. Sad.

Hopefully, this punk gets what coming to him......justice.....and you get to recover your items.
