Went to the SPCA today...
For no particular reason, except that we're starting to look for a place where they can take care of our cats during our holiday vacations (yeah, right...) We ended up at the nearest SPCA, where they also offer such services... And I/we fell in love w/ this little guy named London, which it turns out was put on adoption today. He's adorable. And he gets along w/ other cats. But since I always require a bit of time off to assimilate whatever it is that gets through to me, we came back home and left him behind. We already have 2 fairly high maintenance old cats here - one diabetic and one w/ kidney problems. So it's insulin shots every day, blood tests, special diets for each of them, and so on. And they require a lot of attention - not your typical independent furry buddies. They're always at most w/in 3 ft of us. This also means that we can wake up w/ a $2000 veterinary bill tomorrow morning. Or two... But a few hours passed and we just can't stop thinking about the little guy. So I thought, what the heck! We're going to pick him up tomorrow as soon as they'll let us in. As rational as I try to be, I just can't help it. If it were just me, this house would probably end up like the Osbourne's. Crosses, gargoyles and animals everywhere. And my wife is even worst - she had 12 cats for a while... In a twisted kind of way, she expects me to be the reasonable one. So I'll be staying away from any shelter where they keep dobermans, boxers and rottweilers for a while, at least in the near future. Gotta be the reasonable on, haven't I?

Don't let him pass you by ol pal, go get him! :-)

London is here w/ us in his new home. :) Got up at 8:30 to make sure we'd be there as soon as they'd open the doors at 11 - and to have a bit of extra time before to buy a second litter box and a few other things. He's a pretty vocal little guy - he rushed towards us and started meowing the minute we walked in. No problem getting him to enter in his transport bag - which is quite a change from our other furry fellows. They hate that thing. So he's now in the process of discovering his new environment (and this one is a climber) and getting to know our 2 other cats - one of which shows complete indifference and the other one following him around, a bit perplexed.

It's things like this that have gotten me banned from every pet store in town. When my kids were younger, we'd stop there without mom. Hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, fish, you name it, I bought it. The final straw came when I bought a lizard that was about 8 inches long. It ate crickets, which we had to buy by the dozen. I asked the wife to stop and pick some up one time, and she got to talking to the owner of the shop. Unbeknownst to me, this lizard would eventually grow to 3 or 4 feet in length, and would need to change the diet to mice and rats. At that point she told the owner in no uncertain terms that if he sold me another creature of any kind, she would be back for him. I walked in a week or so later to get crickets, and the guy says "dont look at those fish, or your wife will kill us both".

Update - not that it really matters... Went outside and London followed me on the balcony and started rolling around in the sun when I noticed that his belly was shaved. I thought he was quite delicate for a 2 y.o. male. A quick look at his papers quickly confirmed that London is a she - the odd thing being that the NSPCA web site gives the description "neutered boy" and all the employees referred to her as he. Love her all the same. And I guess it'll spare us the possible issues of having two male cats (even neutered) in the same house.

And I also want dogs, at least one or two. I've always wanted Rottweilers or Dobermans. They'll keep me in shape. But we just love animals, most of them anyway. A bunny? Never again - unless we end up buying a farm or something My worst experience as an animal owner.

Well lets not go blithely about gender labeling, shall we? Not at such a tender age. Lets let he or she develop at his or her pace.

The loud stomping in the cage in the middle of the night, the relentlessly pushing the water dispenser against the cage so that it's knocking against the metal all the time, the throwing hay and woodchips everywhere outside the cage, the trying to eat everything in sight when you let them out the cage (cables beware) and the obvious pooping everywhere. Not to mention, they're very cute but totally dumb (at least ours was). Which in itself isn't that bad, but w/ all of the above considered, bunnies don't have much going for them as far as I'm concerned. In a house w/ carpeting, never again.

We were expecting that maybe things wouldn't be so quiet at night, but everything went A1. As soon as we went to bed, London jumped in on my side and spent the whole night w/ me. She's pretty much daddy's girl, which is perfect because our other female cat is mommy's girl and demands exclusive attention - the other side of the bed is HER spot. She's still following me everywhere. If she ventures a couple of feet away from me, she constantly comes back and rolls around my legs, as if she wanted to verify that I'm still there w/ her. And if I walk out of the house for a bit, my wife says she just climbs on my pillow and sleeps there till I return. Daddy's girl. :)
