Scarbee Jay-bass is great fun to play - it has some advanced modelling of hammer ons, slides, different neck positions. It's a Kontakt instrument, but can be played in the free Kontakt player.

The velocity switching between Sustain, mutes and Harms takes a bit of practice to say the least, but nothing a session in PRV can't fix. There is also a MM bass in the series. I cant say which is best, it depends on the type of music. I have the DI versions and I route through Guitar Rig 3 XE if I want amped sounds. I previously used Studio Instruments Bass a lot, it's gathering dust now.

Scarbee is good, so are some of the samples on my Halion player. You get slides, hammer-ons, fret noise etc. But I've just re-recorded the bassline of one of my songs with real bass - and there is absolutely no comparison. (Apart from my sloppy playing!)

Trilian from Spectrasonics is great. And, as mentioned, the Scarbee basses are very good. Another product line to look at is www.orangetreesamples.com especially their Iconic Jaco. Bassis is another full featured set. Good hunting.

I prefer a real bass first. But after that, my ol pal with the bright yeller fro is correct. Trillian. Great articulations, good round robin (though a terrible oval cardinal) and otherwise great sounds.
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

I like the Ik Mulitmedia Ampeg for re-amping and even doctoring up midi bass created by a sampler. Add a UAD Helios on top, and it doesn't get much better than that for me. :)

I've been using Manybass fretless for a while, pretty cool, but why does a fretless include fret noises? lol Recently got the Scarbee Pre Bass, also pretty cool...

+100 for Trilian. It really sounds fantastic, and the articulations are impressive. Watch the videos as Spectrasonics if you have the time.

Kontakt with Scarbee, Jay and Pre - unamped, then run through POD Farm or Guitar Rig 4. I'm very curious about Trillian, though. Had Atmosphere and now Omnisphere and love both, so I'm very tempted to try Trillian.

+1 for Kontakt 4 and Scarbee basses, though I'm still trying to figure out how to use the articulations with my too-small keyboard controller and/or guitar synth (any tips from above posters who use it appreciated!). Besides the Scarbee basses, Kontakt 4 comes with some nice ones and can also load other formats and save as Kontakt sound.

Phoenix +1 for Kontakt 4 and Scarbee basses, though I'm still trying to figure out how to use the articulations with my too-small keyboard controller and/or guitar synth (any tips from above posters who use it appreciated!). There are two methods for controling the articulation, one is the playing style and the other key switches. Key switches will take at least an Octave off your keyboard so anything less than 61 keys and you are limited. Velocity is critical as velocity switching is used to switch between harms, mutes and sustained notes. How well you can master this depend on you keyboard and your skill, reliably playing notes with a midi velocity <10 for harms is particularly challenging for me, even in step mode. Playing with the velocity profiles on your keyboard (if it has them) may help but I usually need a midi edit session to clean it up. The other thing you need is a sustain pedel to trigger the slides in Pre Bass. (this is one of my favourite features)
