What Can I do?
I have been messing with home recording for like nearly a decade now. Ain't ever gonna be rich/famous. Not willing to spend too much money - but it get's all of my free time. I want that free time to be playing- not programming. I have felt my way through many multitrack recording suites. To that end MC5 was magic! Christ! it gave you pictures of what each track was! Plug - literally- and play. Working off of an OLD XP machine with nothing but ram and an external hard drive - no issues - except that I lost the disc. Not even a year old. Black friday - I buy a new comp and MC 6. I am not happy at all with this. Can I download a new copy of MC5 and activate it using my license etc. from my original MC5 purchase? Got everything but the disc. Do believe I regestered everything the day I baught it. Seems you should have some such option when it is so easy to just key gen/crack. I am seriously frutrated with MC 6. Should be marketed as somthing different than MC5. I feel tricked by the packaging. Really. I haven't gotten a goodnightsleep in days, and just when i think I know... yeah. Guess I need to find the next MC 5 for this gen of computers since I am not feeling the retail love (big mistake IMO).

Bluesmaker..... welcome. MC5... did you register it in your personal account on the cakewalk site? If not, please do so. If it was a DownLoad, generally an email to cake is all it takes to get the DL re-authorized so you can DL it again. Congrats on the new computer & MC6. However, as you have discovered, MC6 is a whole different animal compared to MC5. It's based on the new Sonar X1. I built a new DAW last year and installed XP 32 on it even though W7/64 was available...... I love XP as a platform. It has the same stuff in it but the GUI looks different and the functions are in different places. I feel your pain and agree with you in many ways. Simple things like inserting an envelope became a total frustration to me until I discovered where they had "hidden" that feature. I'm still trying to figure a number of things out. I have MC4,5,6 & now X1 as well. All I can say is they are all good DAW platforms. Loaded with features. I decided to upgrade to X1 and do all that was necessary to understand it and that is happening. I now use X1 for everything. I have the others for reference when people ask questions. I have found that the F1 (help) menu is fairly decent. The biggest thing is getting past our personal likes and habits, because we are all used to the familiar, and learning something new, and new ways to do things goes against the grain of our nature. Something about the path of least resistance. The more I work with the new MC6 & X1, the more I'm beginning to appreciate the way it does things. As much as I really love MC4..... would I go back now? Probably not. Back to MC5/6... you can load MC5 and MC6 on the new computer, which I would recommend. Be sure to get the latest updates from cake's web site for MC5..... it fixed a number of issues and gives you more sounds in Sound Center. If you run into brick walls and insurmountable problems, simply come here and ask. A bunch of us are using MC6/X1 and can get you pointed in the right direction. EDIT: There is a ton of videos on YOUTUBE as well.... search>>> Sonar X1 Training Tutorial http://www.youtube.com/wa...sU&feature=related

you posted this thread an hour ago and you're "being ignored"? come on! I think you're being a little melodramatic there, blues. this forum doesn't generate traffic every 10 seconds, so relax and wait a couple of hours and someone will likely answer you. If you had the MC5 disk you could certainly install it and not ever use MC6 if you didn't want to. like guitarhacker said, if you downloaded MC5 from the cakewalk store then you can probably log onto your account and download it again, but if you bought physical disks then you're probably out of luck unless you can find the disks. in the other thread you said you were having problems with laying down drums, but I don't see that question here in this thread. if you're having trouble with drums, MC5 and MC6 both have Studio Instruments Drums (SI Drums). do you know how to use a drum softsynth for drum beat creation? if not, I'd say start by looking at this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UquKaN5Ruio it goes over other instruments you don't have , but it does go over SI drums and how to audition, drag and drop the MIDI loops into the project and create a drum base for your project. if you have any questions after falling asleep over this video, feel free to ask!

MC 6 is very different from my previous versions, but I've found it can record just as well. A lot of things are in different places now, but they are there, mostly. I can still plug in and record. Is there a particular function you need help with?

The ignored comment comes from an earlier post still not responded to plus working at getting everything set up at after little sleep, doing my real job for a day and then working on it until like 4:30 Am. It's 8 am and I have been at work for 1/2 hour, so please excuse my attitude. Thanks for your responses and help! My main issue is that when I 'drag & drop' there seems to be an issue with going direct to main. I get meter jumps etc. but no sound. I am finding out the overall problem seems to be related to swiitching to a 64 bit system - my tascam drivers don't want to run on the new machine and my digitech asio drivers aren't being recognized for some reason. I tried ASIO-4-all and it worked BEUTIFULLY with almost no lag for 2 minutes or so... then something popped and now everything is worse. Faught with Asio-4-all for most of last night... uninstalled back at square one.

I was looking all over here for some other post of yours I didn't respond to, then found it in the Instruments forum. First time I ever went there. I only recently got SID when I got MC 6 and haven't used it too much yet, but the dragging and dropping seemed to work fine on my system. What are you having problems with beside it 'not working like in MC 5'? I've read here that TASCAM drivers are poorly written and don't always function correctly, but some who use TASCAMs say their machines run fine. Did you visit the TASCAM and Digitech websites to get the latest drivers for your system? Regardless of your system being 64-bit, you'll probably need the 32-bit drivers since MC 6 is 32-bit. Clarification needed. I don't have an audio interface on this 64-bit computer and my DAW computer is 32-bit, so I'm not sure what drivers are needed for a mixed system/program set up.

Wow Greg, taking this personal? I also emailed Cake directly. As I may have stated, not feeling the commercial love. it is a lower end product and I am rightfully catergorized as one of many who in sum only make up a smaller part of profit... but maybe I am wrong. Of course I have looked for the latest drivers. Tascam is kinda iffy so I have been prioritizing getting the digitech stuff to work... I see the driver... I know it's there, but for some reason MC 6 doesn't see it. I will play with 32 vs 64 bit, but o the tascam side - made no diff.

no problem. everyone gets upset sometimes. all is forgiven! TASCAM. tascam must be the most gullible company in the world when it comes to hiring software management and/or programmers. their drivers are crap. (and did I mention lately I'm still mad at them about Gigastudio? ). I'm going to have to "clarify" what Greg says - for a 64bit operating system you do NOT want to put 32bit drivers on it. that will not work. if you have a 64 bit operating system you MUST have 64bit drivers from the manufacturer. worry about getting the soundcard working first, then worry about getting sound out of the softsynth. which tascam model number soundcard do you have? and did you download the latest 64bit drivers from tascam's website and install them? EDIT: we were typing replies at the same time. if you'd rather get the digitech working first, then what model is it? and do you have the latest 64bit drivers for it?

I would have to look to see the model of the sound card... I have a really old tascam US 225 and then a US-125... but I had actually stopped using them after I accidentilly found out my RP-155 actually worked better. Totally by accident and comical if you could have seen my face... but I digress... I know I'll get it to work. One of the MOST frustrating things was the couple of minutes it totally worked with the ASIO 4 all driving everything. I don't know why but ASIO then started saying that Digitech wasn't available. Haven't tried ASIO with Tascam yet. Glad to know I shouldn't have to create two tracks to listen to drums.... particularly since I found some hnice loops from this site.

With sound card and drivers... you really need to have a good sound card, and not a factory card or a gamers card. It needs to be a musical interface card...specific to the recording aspect. Using ASIO4ALL is in my opinion, a temporary patch until one gets a "real card" that runs Native ASIO drivers. It's possible to use factory cards & A4A, but that's not the best option.

I'm meant the model number of the tascam (which you gave) and since you're wanting to work with the digitech, - I mean the model number of the digitech "soundcard". all audio interfaces = soundcard = sound interface, etc. if you can record and playback sound on it - it's a soundcard and it requires drivers.

Ever since I stopped using the line in jack - I have used the sound cards on my external devices (M-Audio, Tascam, Digitech etc.) and don't use anything internal. Would it be worth it to upgrade my sound card in the machine?

Would it be worth it to upgrade my sound card in the machine? NO.... don't even consider that. If an upgrade is done, it would be to the external soundcard.... and make it a dedicated USB musical Interface. edit: that would only be needed if the external's you now have are not suitable and do not use ASIO drivers or have the features you want and need.

well, I disagree with guitarhacker here. you can get a very good internal soundcard OR external. PCI or PCIe soundcards are typically more stable as far as the system goes (windows will never shut down their power or "lose" them). but most of the internal ones are line input only (although there are some with breakout boxes with mic pres as well). however, as I said above, the digitech is also considered a "soundcard" - it really depends on your needs and what you want from the device and how you want to use it. and if you DO use the digitech as a soundcard you do NOT want to get another soundcard at the same time. having more than one soundcard in the system WILL cause you problems.

Beagle, sorry, I should have clarified that statement..... yes, I agree the INTERNAL PCI cased are good upgrades if one chooses to go that direction. I was thinking about the gamer cards most people consider to be "upgrades" when they don't know any better.

Hey BluesMaker - I really liked the interface in MC5 - ugraded to SHS7XL and was happy as a pig in S#!t with it. As a part of the upgrade the guys at Cakewalk 'threw in' a copy of X1 Essential. You do get used to the new interface. The learning curve is not nearly as steep as going to another DAW. Take a little time to play with the screensets. You can make MC6 look and act a lot like MC5 with the screensets. Then you start to figure out that you can use the interface to make it a lot easier than MC5 ever was. Hang in there. Glen

FYI: Uninstalled and re-installed all my drivers in compatibility mode and (Angel choir voices go: Aaaaahhhh - ahhh- ahh - ahhhh!) Everything works so far. almost 0 latency, great sound quality... and must say I would never usually use the song parts drag and rop stuff, but just messing around with it last night - it's ok. While I would probably never use it for final production, it made me consider sounds I might not normally use in my music :).
