cryophonik Yup, the best clap results come from doing it yourself. It really doesn't take that long and the results are better (IMO) than using sampled ones. Personally, I like them to be panned apart and a little on the sloppy side. Here's an example of 5 or 6 claps panned around and compressed/EQ'ed together: https://soundcloud.com/cryophonik/fever-feat-aliciya-angel-radio
Hey mate, I really like that track, the whole thing gels well! I know some folks hate labelling but I'd stick that in the Progressive House genre which I love & that's probably why I like your track! Looking & having listened to some of your other tracks, I can see you vary your style within the electronica genre which is great as it's good to be somewhat versatile & something I'm striving for... I see your kit list includes a Virus Ti, is that what's making the stab type sound? Have you not had any of the dreaded sync problems associated with the Ti's? It's one synth I've avoided so far because so many users have reported problems with it but I'd be interested in hearing your experience. Sorry, this is going off topic... perhaps time for a new thread! Cheers, Rick.

I always record live takes of handclaps, shakers, tamborine, and other misc percussion. It's crazy not to do this, assuming you have a microphone and a relatively unreactive recording space. It supplements the drum samples and makes things sound so much more real. It's a similar trick to mixing one real violinist in with your sampled strings.

Thanks Rick! Yes, he stabs were made in my Virus. My TI2 (and previously my Polar TI1) have both been pretty solid for me on several DAWs (e.g., Sonar, PT9/10, Studio One). Occasionally, the arp goes nutzoid out of time when playback starts, but stopping playback for a few seconds before restarting sets it straight again. And, I've had the rare occasion where the arp has gone haywire during a bouncedown. Those are probably show stoppers for some people, but they're rare enough that they don't really bother me. Anyway, sorry for the OT - if you have any other questions re: the Virus, feel free to PM me.

I have a Roland Fantom that I use for claps most of the time. Sometimes I'll beef them up with noise from a Z3TA+ depending on what I'm going for.

I actually have Fantom built into the VS-700. What patch do you like?

Because of the overwhelming number of people saying to make my own, I guess I will try that. I do see a bit of a logic problem there, though, that assumes I could make better samples than Native Instruments, Roland, Yamaha, EastWest, Abbey Road, etc.

If you're happy with the vocals you record, then you should be able to record handclaps as well as the big boys. Set up a recording for sound on sound and record about 4 or 5 (or as many as you need) claps for the left channel, and do the same for the right channel, and you should be good to go.

I usually use the Clp/Cym Menu from the drum presets and hit notes until I find what I'm looking for. The claps are in the bass clef range.

I've recorded a few tracks of real claps, bounced them and put a chorus on them. Try it. It sounds good. Best, RKS

OK, I installed The Clap from Paper Stone Instruments. It's very good. http://www.sampleism.com/paperstoneinstruments At first, I couldn't get it to work in Kontakt because I was getting a msg that said "785 samples not found." Glyn at the company was quick to respond and the problem was resolved immediately. (Basically, when you get that message, the error box has a place to browse for the sample folder. You do that, and then resave the nki, and the problem never happens again. It took less than 5 mins to resolve.) He also told me a version 2 is on the way. Awesome. The instrument sounds really good. The Clap as an octave of keys mapped to different numbers of clapping hands: the first key is one person, the next is two, etc. all the way up to 13. I have had good luck by using a small number of claps on each side of the stereo image, but one of the larger groups using the stereo mic option is also good. Secret tip from The Mighty Konrad: If you use two tracks of claps with the same number of people in each, on one track, put a clap note with zero velocity right before the real notes so the two tracks are playing different round robin versions. This is really an old technique from orchestra sample libraries. For $20 bucks, this is a pretty handy set of samples. Great suggestions above about making my own, but too much trouble to save twenty bucks. Maybe I will regret that when I am homeless and need $20 for wine.
