What Have YOU Done with Win7 ?

Howdy...

Could we discuss what's been done differently using SONAR 8 with Win7
as opposed to those who have been using Vista 64 bit to good result?

If you've seen my posts over the last three weeks, I've been on a steep (and fun) learning curve to master SONAR 8 pe (8.3.1) running within Vista Ultimate 64...

It's becoming increasingly noted that Win7 is much easier to work with
...specifically it's much easier to operate SONAR in Win7

I understand and read that Win7 is "lighter" in it's use of system resources...

It seems like a great time to evaluate the software... while it can obtained for relatively little expense (or free)

Care to join in?

If you've already started the 64 bit challenge then it probably won't hurt to jump to Windows 7. The biggest issue is code that is not 64 bit aware. For applications they seem to have things locked, but for plug-ins it's still the wild west.

I have no experience with Vista of any word length, so I can't speak to the improvements reported. What I can tell you is that Windows 7 (X86 and X64) seems to run more efficiently than XP Pro SP3 X86. The difference is not huge, but in terms of UI responsiveness it is noticeable.

I do have to underscore the point about plug-ins, but if you are using Vista X64 then you're already familiar with the problem...

This will make me much more aware of what steps I will take...even in an "evaluation" mode...
I don't have any intention to replac VIsta 64 at this time!... I've run out of ibuprofen...

    Thanks wst3 for the input

I spent the past two days trying to get my fa-101 to work with windows 7. After lots of hair pulling I decided to re install everthing with vista I
am glad I did. Everything is running smoothly again. Maybe I will do it again in the future after more drivers are supported. I ried this area in windows 7 that lets you use a previously working edition of windows to help unsupported drivers, I did that about a million times with no luck and eventually gave up.

OH Man... that's exactly what I plan NOT to do!
The Vista installation has been enough of a circus and now it's time to make some money off all this effort!
I do this for a living... and that's scary enough!

Before I placed this thread in this forum, I did a search on windows 7 and couldn't come up with anything except a listof posts with "windows" in various sentence combinations...

I'd like to hear from folks that have been brave enough to run it with SONAR!
    I'm not there yet!
but it certainly does sound interesting from a variety of reports here and in other application forums...

Thanks riojazz... are you using a dual monitor setup with nVidia card?
Do you have the Rapture upgrade installed as well?

I know there seems to have been some problems with the Rapture upgrade and Vista 64 ... I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 and so far all is working OK... I just haven't installed the Rapture upgrade yet.

If you use an audio computer to make a living- as I do- I'd never recommend trying beta or even the 'first release' of ANY software. I didn't upgrade to Sonar 8 until the very last release. When I bought the box I have now with Vista it was a month-long nightmare before I got straight!

With that said, thanks to the folks who take the time (and have the patience), to test the new stuff.

Great advice... fortunately I have backups to work on when one machine goes down...
The feedback I'm getting on Win 7 is very upbeat... many differentpeople from different dusciplines are reporting good things about it...

BUT it will be relegated to "research" and that's about all I'm expecting unless something really promising shows up on the radar...

OTH: I bought SONAR 8 immediately!

and I second that motion of thanks to all the folks that take time to study and report...
I'm trying to be one of them!

I have a dual boot of Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 32-bit RC installed on my music PC. On Windows 7 everything installed fine. My iLok initially didn't want to install right, but they released new drivers and it installed without issue after that.

The only plug-in I've had any issue with so far is Melodyne. It won't render the screen correctly in my Windows 7. I've submitted a post at the Celemony forum about it, but only got a response of "we haven't tried Windows 7 yet, but we will when it is released".

My UAD cards work without issue. I have a dual monitor setup and it worked right from the initial install of the OS (and I have to say the initial install was pain free). I'm running a GeForce video card without issue. My audio card (Lynx AES16) installed without issue and works as expected.

I've ordered the upgrade to Windows 7 Pro and will probably replace my Vista 64-bit install (as well as the release candidate image) when I get it. Of course that is after I see that Melodyne is working right.

I'm glad I tried the RC as it does seem like it is going to be a better version this time around.

    Good luck,
    Tom

FWIW, I went down the Windows 7 64 bit path a couple weeks ago with the RC. Generally it works pretty well and it solved my most pressing problems (RAM). I now can have loaded Superior Drummer 2, Scarbee Black Bass and Akoustik Piano without a problem and with RAM to spare for other things.

    Problems for me -
Melodyne. Just flat doesn't work for me with either Bitbridge or Jbridge. I cannot get audio to transfer audio to the plugin.
Alphatrack - works just fine for most things, but if I try to shut down with it plugged in I get an immediate blue screen.

Stuff that seems to work -
    Lynx AES-16e
    Lynx Aurora 16
    Sonar
    Sup Drummer 2.0
    BFD 2
    NI's Komplete stuff
    UAD2
    Dim Pro
    Rapture
    Edirol PCR800
    M-Audio KS88
    POD Farm
    iLOK
EWQL Symphonic Orch Platinum (so I guess that's the PLAY engine)

    Good luck

    THANKS Tyacko & Razorwit !!!
The information you posted is precisely what I am looking for
I suspect others too will benefit...
Especially the mention of Rapture working... was it the complete upgrade or "LE"

The complete upgrade seems to cause problems in several user instances...
It crashed my system completely for some odd reason... after a system restore and a CClean wipe up...
SONAR is once again flourishing under Vista 64 Ult.

I give Win 7 64 bit 2 thumbs and few toes up. The only issues Ive had with it was the fire wire drivers. Other than doing a quick change on the drivers its works great. With all the 64 bit beta testing by NI as well the new releases from Cakewalk it seems to run smoothly. For those who seem to have fire wire issues try changing the drivers to the legacy version.

I think Win 7 will be a winner. But I look at this with caution until its finally released and all the stuff is in it. We can't know yet that it will be anything like it seems to be now. I would wait awhile until all the dust settles and we have real feedback on the full version. But unlike Vista much of the third party development is already done or will be done. Vista came on the scene almost as a shock. No one seemed prepared for it except CW. Now that its fully mature its a great OS. Windows 7 should be even better. But we wont know for sure until later.

I hate saying this but just my 2 cents. Also, there is no hurry. We have time on our side this time.

I agree with John on this statement. We've seen Microsoft change course late in an OS campaign before. Lets hope they've learned from that lesson.

For those of you using firewire interfaces, if you have problems with Windows 7, you might want to try this before you give up on it. Go to your control panels device manager, then change the firewire drivers to the legacy ones. This helped me to get my Steinberg MR816x working.

RE: What Have YOU Done with Win7 ? 2009/07/13 12:22:18 (permalink)
After an initial "burn in " period with Windows 7 I was impressed enough to roll it out across all my computers at home and in the studio -- yes, even with this just being an RC version.

I have Windows 7 RC installed on:
    - rehearsal studio PC (running 64-bit Win7 and 64-bit Sonar8)
    - my home studio PC (regular 32-bit Win7 and 32-bit Sonar8)
    - my kids PC
    - my wife's laptop (more than 3 years old)

So far we all agree the following:
    - it seems faster than Windows XP and Vista
    - it seems more stable than any previous OS
    - it has better usability (I particularly like the organization of libraries, and have customized these for much better workflow)

I have Delta1010 cards in my studio PCs(two in each) and they run fine. All the PC's are self-built (with my kids' PC being made up of older components, whereas my home studio PC has Intel Quad-Core, 4GB RAM, etc. And the rehearsal studio PC falls somewhere in-between).

Given that I've been a software engineer for over 20 years I understood the risks associated with an early release -- but by the same token I was careful enough to put Windows 7 through its paces and realized that I/we would all be more productive by taking the plunge now, and I haven't looked back.

FWIW, I liked XP but hated its UI. Vista was an improvement in some ways but a disaster in others (although the current Service Pack is pretty decent). IMHO Windows 7 blows them away for what I need it to do. Of course, this may be different for everyone else and the usual disclaimer acronym applies: YMMV.

    Cheers
    Peter

I updated my Vista 32bit to Windows 7 RC on my production laptop (i.e. my only system with all my important music apps on it). I have been so impressed I have already pre-ordered my upgrade copies and can't wait to get the full final version on it. It has not only improved normal workflow- but has also allowed me to do the unthinkable- use my onboard laptop audio chipset as a near-zero latency ASIO output (when i say near zero- I can't bring the buffers any lower than minimum in Asio4All). It actually performs better than my USB audio devices (Sonic Cell/Novation X-station/Presonus AudioBox USB). Unbelievable. My next step is to try it on my HP Mini to see if I can turn that into a little mean vsti playing machine.

Firewire is an issue with video producers also under different platforms...
The percentage of hits is greater than misses but the "misses" odds are quite good...
Therefore firewire is a frequent source of "issues"...

In my case, Firewire is rock solid in 32 bit Vista as it is in XP Pro sp2...

It coughed terribly with SONAR in 64 bit Vista so I traded my Audio Kontrol 1 USB unit to the 64 bit machine and now run the firewire Mackie Onyx Satellite on the 32 bit voice room computer...

    Thanks for your reply terry1

I believe this is the best strategy...
i will "test it"... but it ain't going into the main prod station !

    Thanks John!

    Cheers
    Peter

And of course... this is exactly what our little hearts are all wanting to see!!!
This is a great report and YES...those delta 1010's are bulletproof!

RE: What Have YOU Done with Win7 ? 2009/07/18 07:37:46 (permalink)
    Hi,

Been running Windows 7 RC 32 bit (old audio card, don't want to run the risk of 64 bit)
for a week, about 20 hours of Sonar use and thought I'd post my experiences.
In a nutshell, works fine so far and no major problems.

BTW, I use softsynths and audio files only, so no tracking done.

    To summarise:

Latency has a slight improvement. I used to run at 5.3, but can now do 4. I actually
got four Reaktor instances running at 1.something, but before it crashed. However doing anything
at that used to be impossible on XP. Thing is, I've not done any tweaking to the system at all,
so may get even lower latencies later.

I had one BSOD when I updated the audio driver. No problems at all since then, and the new driver actually installed OK
    and was fine on reboot.

One obversation with IRQ conflicts. My wireless network adaptor sits on the same IRQ
as my video card - IRQ 16; never been able to change that, so under XP simply swicthed off networking before using Sonar.
So far, I've not had one IRQ_NOT_EQUAL...crash, including while downloading stuff - eg from BBC iPlayer. Before, it was a total
    kiss of death.

Had a few problems with sampler based ensembles in Reaktor not working - sometimes it simply did nothing. Turned out to be permissions
based, quite a simple fix, but worthwhile remembering to set ownership and Full Control permissions on your data files.

So no real problems so far. The OS seems a lot lighter, snappier, and easier to navigate around.

As to running old software, everthing worked fine or the compatability mode fixed any problems. Except Command and Conquer Tiberium Wars, which only seems
to want to run off the onboard sound card

IMHO it's a pretty darn good OS with none of the problems usually associated with MS releases. This will probably be the first of their products I shall get
before the first Service Pack release. The result of a proper Beta testing program, perhaps?

    Thanks,

    Eric
