What I learned

This really isn't a technique so much as a giant thank you to all of you who post about your techniques. I don't post much because I feel I still have way to much to learn but by way of thank you here's what I learned:

This morning I was starting out a new project and I wanted to use a new preamp I recently picked up (Avalon AD-2022). I was playing a Taylor T5 and (my understanding is) it has a stereo output so I split that into each of DIs of the Avalon. I set up a folder with two mono audio tracks, one for each of the outs. Each tracks was sent to the master bus. Each track had Input Echo: On and was showing activity when ever I played anything. The meter on the master bus did not display activity and I couldn't hear anything...I'm thinking: Huh? So I routed one of the tracks to a bus (my Delay) that was routed to the master. Sound!!! I routed the outher track through the same bus (Delay) and no sound! What the hay? I was really kind of freaking out at this.

Now I know most of you know the answer to the issue. But for me it was a real head scratcher and I was about to post in the X1 forum when I thought: It's got to be a phase issue canceling out the sound. I hit the Phase reverse on one of the tracks and Voila! Sound! And my point is that this forum helped me in a way I hadn't quite comprehended. Through hours of reading posts here stuff is slowing sinking in (possibly through osmosis) and it is really helping me become more knowledgable about getting the sounds in my head recorded and coming out of my monitors.

So I really wanted to just say Thank You and Keep Up The Great Work. The folks on the forum absolutely rock (or swing if you're a jazz affectionado)

Best regards,

Mike

Hey miguelito thanks for your comments. I find the forum quite interesting actually and there are a lot of great tips not to mention great links to other software products such as virtual instruments and effects. I enjoy picking up information and giving it out too. There are some great engineers on here.

Yes I think when you are dealing with two signals immediately you might think it is a good idea to check the phase relationship between them. I am surprised that one signal is inverted compared to the other leaving your instrument though. Could the phase of one of the mic pres been reversed in your Avalon. And when you switched polarity again on the track to came back to normal.  I would check out how the instrument is set up too.

Hi Jeff, yes there are definitely some talented and knowlegable people on the forum, and you in particular have provided some very good information of the past couple years.

While the Avalon does have settings for phase, both channels were set to their default settings (off). Oddly I seem to recall that I have attempted a similar configuration (T5 with stereo split cable) into a different pre in the past...without the phase issue. I could be wrong though.

I guess the point I was trying to make was not so much about a problem I had but that due to the erudite postings of some I have gained some understanding that I am able to draw upon to solve my challenges...without resorting to a flame war against my DAW of choice. lol.

    Regards,

    Mike
