What I'd like to see in Sonar automation (ideally)

Apart from just fixing and refining what is there already, I'd actually like to see a whole new approach to automation in future versions. I know this is just a pipe dream.

As much as automation lanes and envelopes make perfect sense for some automation tasks, for others they're a cumbersome and unwieldy PITA. Especially when you're automating multiple effects on a track. I know this might not apply to everyone, but sometimes - especially when you're working on electronic genres - it's not out of the ordinary to want to automate the parameters on five or more effects in a chain. Let's say you're automating three parameters on five effects (even if it's just pushing buttons in and out) - that's 15 automation lanes. It's too much.

In addition to this, there is the distinction between discrete automation and continuous automation. It makes sense to draw an envelope for a gradual swell in volume or a movement of the R-Mix window, but what about turning effects on and off? Or discrete changes in a parameter value? When I'm drawing what looks like a square wave as an automation envelope, and indeed drawing many of these square wave envelopes for multiple automation tasks on the same track, I can't help thinking that there must be a better way.

What I envision is some kind of alternative to drawing envelopes, a way of expressing the automation of multiple discrete parameter changes in the same lane. I'm picturing a series of automation nodes, as before, but each one of those nodes can represent a list of automation events, which appears when you hover the mouse over it or click on it.

For instance, a node might contain the following event list:

* Set Sonitus Delay Mix(L) to 30%
* Set Sontius Delay Mix(R) to 15%
* Turn off vallhallaRoom
* Set ProChannel EQ HP to 600Hz
* Set ProChannel EQ LP to 3000Hz

Of course you can enter and edit these events in a separate event list window. I'm also picturing a more efficient way of choosing the parameters you want, perhaps by clicking a "choose" button and then clicking on the relevant knob on the effect in question.

Of course this is just a rough idea and I'm sure many of you will immediately see what's wrong with it (or wonder why in the hell anyone could want such a feature in the first place) and also I have no idea how this would work in conjunction with continuous automation envelopes. But I'm just throwing it out there, because when I'm working with intricate automation I sure as hell get the overwhelming sense that there has to be a tidier and more efficient (especially in terms of screen estate) way of doing it.

I also have no idea if the above idea is implemented in other DAW's, having only had experience with Sonar and Pro Tools.

    Snapshots
    A snapshot is a setting or group of settings that SONAR’s controls snap to when your project
    reaches a certain Now Time. You set all the controls to the values you want, and then create a
    snapshot of these settings at a particular Now Time. This approach is useful, for example, when your
    project contains a variety of distinct sections and you want to make a sudden change in one or more
    settings between the sections.
    To create a snapshot of a track or bus parameter
    1. Move the parameter control to where you want it.
    2. Move the Now Time to the location where you want to create the snapshot.
    3. Right-click the control and choose Automation Snapshot in the pop-up menu. You don’t have to
    write-enable the track or bus module.
    An indicator will appear on the control to show that automation has been added, and a node will
    be added to the control's envelope on the track.
    4. Make sure the appropriate Automation Read button is enabled, play your project and listen to
    the results. You can undo the snapshot by using the Undo command, or by taking another
    snapshot at the same Now Time.
    Successive snapshots do not update envelope node values
    When taking multiple automation snapshots at the same Now time, new envelope nodes are created
    instead of updating any existing envelope nodes. To address this issue, undo the previous
    automation snapshot before performing a new snapshot.

    I you have 'blocks' in your track in which several parameters need changing at the same time,
    wouldn't you be better off with a series of clips, each their own properties/effects/automation ?

    John: I'll have to look into automation snapshots because they sound like they could be useful in some ways, however they only apply to Sonar's controls, not plugins.

    Paul P: Yeah that would work in certain situations, however my automation is often such that I need to be able to turn effects on and off for individual notes, note whole clips. For instance, I might have a ping pong delay applied to the snare, but only on certain hits.
