What Is CAL?
I've seen a number of references to "CAL" recently in this forum. I can find no citation of it in the S8 PE pdf manual. Can someone point me to a source of info on the topic? Thanks, if so.

Cakewalk Application Language. CAL was for writing scripts to automate repetitive tasks in Cakewalk. I believe CAL scripts still run, but I do not think they are supported officially anymore. EDIT: Here is the link: http://www.cakewalk.com/DevXchange/CAL.asp D.

There are still functions in SONAR that you can only do with CAL. Many of the CAL routines help with processing of MIDI data. There are many hundreds of CAL routines available. It would be nice to see it given more importance and provided as a full on scripting tool within SONAR. Any development of routines has been left to volunteers who share their script with SONAR users.

And you can find the command on the Process menu, Run Cal, in fact I think it's hotkey is still Ctrl/F1.

I think once upon a time in CAL's history there was a macro record function as well. This was a very long time ago - Pre audio - If I'm not completely off my noodle you would set the macro to record and capture your key strokes and it would write a routine. I used a few other early midi sequencers back in the day so I could be completely full of it.

I thank you mean WHO is Cal? Right? Wail, he was this car dealership owner feller who used to sit on live Brahma bulls and such and try to sell cars in local insert commercials in LA and surroundin environs durin the reign of Johnny Carson, king of the talk shows. Cal Worthington. He was a hoot. Glad somebody remembers him. Either that or yor meanin the Cakewalk proprietary programmin language CAL by which you can program Sonar to do most anything you've got a mind to. Whichever...you've stumbled onto somethin wonderful.

Since the subject is CAL... Can someone tell me if this is possible? Not how to do it - it's pretty elaborate - just whether it's possible, before I commit too much time. I want to write a script that allows me to replace all the instances of one plug with an instance of another within a project. It would use a configuration file that maps parameter settings so that the replacement plug would retain as much of the existing settings as possible. I want to use this so that I could run a mix with (for instance) all UA Neve 88rs channel strips, then with a key stroke, see how the mix might sound with UA 4K (SSL) channel strips set up roughly the same way. I realize I would then have to tweak things, but it would speed a bunch of things up. Right now, I just don't bother doing that sort of A/B because it's so time consuming.

I used a few other early midi sequencers back in the day so I could be completely full of it I think you're remembering correctly. Following the link cornieleous provided, I found my way to http://www.bikexprt.com/cakewalk/caldebug.htm which had this to say: Up through Cakewalk version 6, buttons at the bottom of the CAL View let you open, save and run files. The "run" button lets you run and test programs as you write them. There is no "stop" button, so hit the escape key to stop a runaway CAL program. The button at the lower right of the window is for the CAL Recorder -- more about that later. Cakewalk v. 7 and up are different -- they have only Run, Record and Stop Recording buttons in the CAL view. The buttons are at the top left, an improvement -- you can leave them exposed above or to the left of another view and still use them even when most of the CAL view is covered. (And it often will be covered, because 7.0 and 8.0 bring the file on which the CAL program is working to the top as soon as you hit the "Run" button. Apparently, the idea is that you want to see the file the CAL program is working on -- though you would usually rather keep the CAL view fully visible if you are debugging, which is the usual reason to have a CAL View open.)

Ah well, too bad for me. I don't suppose any DAW has a scripting language that allows this then.

Hi.., does anyone know of a person that could write a CAL file for me, OR if there is one already on available? I need a CAL file that will PAN DRUMS Midi CH. 10 to say FULL LEFT OR FULL RIGHT, I have about 200 midi sequences I play live in my 2-piece duo band, and want to add a drummer, so I need/want to pan ALL MIDI drum to say LEFT channel so he can hear the midi drums in headphones or his monitor mix, then send all other midi out to front of PA. Any ideas... or HELP/SUGGESTIONS would be AWESOME. I am using Cakewalk Sonar 8.0 for my midi sequences. Thanks, Dan 772-209-9236

One could even manipulate external files, dll etc. if you actually know how to program. For some examples search the CAL sites and grab Leach.cal and read the supporting documentation. Most of this stuff is a little over my head, makes my brain hurt.

This could indeed be done but would take some work and might involve a "workaround". For example, you might have both channel strips loaded on each track and bind a CAL to switch off one set of channel strips while activating the others. As with most things, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I use cal often for adding various midi notes. I have cal scripts to insert every 16th , 8th, 4, 2, 1,. insert every other 1, 2,... delete every,... remove X of every Y notes And so on. I have a long one I used to add a series of semi-random panning and volume start and end points for 15 10 minute tracks, to control the volume and movement of droning voices. I most often insert on every 1/4 note to use as metronome, and then for rhythm.
