What Is a "One Shot"?

The Sonar Home Studio web page states "Includes 700 loops, 400 One Shots and FX for music creation".  What is a "One Shot" and how is it used?

A One Shot is something that stops after the sample finishes, like an orchestra hit.

A Loop is something that repeats, like a drum clip.

Technically, inside the sample file are tags which indicate where the loop is to occur. In the case of a drum loop, most likely these are on the extreme start and end. But a violin may have loop points in the middle, so you get an attack, a loop that repeats as long as you keep the key pressed, and a release part that plays out when you let the key go.

You can even have start points some way into the sample. If you play soft, it will start from there. If you play hard, the player will start the sample earlier and include more of the attack part.

But in the case of the samples in the Media folder, I get the impression the categories are more an indication of intended use. If you want to loop an orchestra hit, nothing is stopping you.

Imagine you want to sample some short phrase or sound and trigger it when you step on a midi-stomp-box. Like someone speaking a phrase or bird chirping.

You can trigger it when you want while you perform, but you wouldn't want it looping perpetually. It might not even be rhythmical. So, when you step on your stompbox, it plays once then stops. You might stomp a few times during the piece when the mood strikes you, but you don't want it going constantly.

This is comparison with things you want to have loop, like a drum track, bass loop, guitar part...

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Thanks to both of you for your responses.  Am I correct in assuming another name for a one shot is a "hit"?

A "hit" would be a One-Shot, yes, never a Loop.

But I've never been aware of it as an official term.

I dunno of any one-shots that became "hits", but most "one-hit-wonders" were played over and over again.

Ah, yes. And so loops become hits.
Didn't think of it like that. Haha!
