What Laptop

I'm doing okay with the old PC, without any problems at all (Touch Wood).
I want to get a laptop to make things a bit more mobile. Obviously I need a beefy job, with loadsa space and ram, that goes without saying and I'll choose XP (SP2) over Vista as I think XP is rather more stable.
I need a sound card with lots of inputs and may choose the line6 UX8 unless anyone can offer a better soundcard and/or preamp option.
COMMENTS AND CTITISISM WELCOME.
Thanks
Alan

is it going to be solely for music production? what's your budget?

if you can afford it, check out either Jim Roseberry at Studio Cat or Scott at ADK. they both are regular forumites who also sell DAWs. they're not cheap, but they build solid products and stand behind them with top notch support.

I think you can still get XP (sp2) if you get Dell to build em for you...Fortunately Dell are in Ireland just across the small pond from us.
    Thanks for the tip Herb....

I have XP on a disk... if I knew what I was doing I'd roll it back..... but, I tend to create disasters when I attempt stuff like that... so I have learned to leave well enough alone.... after all... right now..... it works.

So, Allen, I guess we're back to the original question .... What Laptop ???

I used to work for IBM and when someone left, everyone used to fight over who would get his laptop. They used to be called Thinkpads ... Today they are more commonly refered to as Stinkpads ... and they're made in China. I haven't tried one of the Newer Lenova's so I can't really comment on them, but there was a time when the Old IBM's were very reliable desktops/Laptops. I've still got one of the old Aptiva's that I got with an employee's discount. The T61 is kind of in your price range.

I am using a Dell, which are still kind of the standard, but I really think the quality has gone down some.

Good luck in your endeavors ....

You may have to try googling some Laptop ratings and try to find one by process of elimination ... You'll probably find more hits for ones that are problematic.

Tap, lenovo bought up ibm's dexktop division an few years age. They made the coputers for ibm, then put the ibm stickers on. Now, they use theoir own sticjkers, ame compuiter different tags. Not sure about the laptops, I've not seen a lenovo laptop myself.
Herb, I was told (not personal experience) that our old friend billgates made it very difficult to remove vista. Not sure how, maybe hidden registry trees, but it is supposed to cause headaches trying to remove and downgrade to xp...the rat.

    James,
Been googling laptops and to be absolutely honest I can't find a ready built one that is specifically designed for audio recording. They all come with the latest unwanted gimmicks that are of little or no use to me. Like everything else the manufacturers are trying to out do each other by providing (for me at least) the latest useless unrequired gismo. A sign of the times Hmmmmm...

Albert my ol mate, If thats right my money grabbing friend Bill Gates has nackered things up yet again. He certainly isn't going to get me into Vista. I'll use an old PC box thats lying around and build a decent spec using my old XP disc. Just thought, I may have to find an XP with SP2 as the Line 6 UX8 which I intend to purchase doesn't like SP3 (or so I'm told.)

Service pacs can be deleted, but billgates has a way of messing up our plans every chance he gets, as some programs have been altered to work best with sp3, others never bothered to patch their programs to accomodate them, and a new windows operating system is in the wings, just waiting for it's chance to do it to us again. Did I mention lately how much I hate b/g
