What MIDI controllers/Keyboards do you guys use with MC5?

I am a beginner with only experience in percussion. I saw best buy has a M-Audio - Pro Tools KeyStudio for a decent price and considering picking this one up.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

I didn't look at the price....but if you have an interface with midi inputs on it, any midi keyboard with midi outputs will work. From the cheap "toys" at the local Walmart for $49.95  to the high end keyboard work stations costing several thousand. As long as it send midi data out... you can use it regardless of the price...so look for the features and "feel" you need.

I use an old Yamaha DX27S.... simply because I've had it for years. If I was buying new...I would look for something with weighted keys and touch sensitive keys like a real piano has.

I like the midi outs... but I understand that many keyboards are now USB and I hear that works well.

My web site has some stuff (basic) on midi and setting up synths in MC4&5. You might want to check it out if you are just getting started.

the keystudio looks like a decent setup, but I don't have any actual experience with it.

personally I use a yamaha Motif XS6 and a CASIO PX3 (just bought this one a few days ago!).  but those are pretty high end keyboards.  I use the Motif mainly for its sounds and flexibility and use the PX3 because it's a weighted 88 key digital piano.

I use a Yamaha PSR-GX76. A MIDI keyboard, not a controller. It's about 10 years old and still works perfectly.

Just bought an M-audio Radium-49 and I am learning how to use it with MC4. Works fairly well as a straight midi controller.  The learn feature works as well for the
8 programmable sliders and 8 programmable rotary pots.

I bought the M-Audio 49 but didn't like the delay with respect to the keystroke. I bought it back and on the way home figured that's going to hold true for other keyboards as well as the signal has to transmit. Guess I will have to grow acustom timing the keystroke. Since I am new to it, maybe I should get to know the software first, practice on the piano roll then update to a keyboard.

That has nothing to do with the keyboard; it's your sound card, possibly with a touch of computer inefficiency (don't have all the settings dialed in yet).
What sound card do you use?

Greg is correct. The sound card in your computer is the source of the latency. Most likely you are running on a factory sound card, and they are not designed to process the amounts or kinds of data we need to process when recording and mixing.

That is why everyone here that pursues this hobby has a decent aftermarket USB or firewire interface designed specifically for recording.

If you're talking about "timing" your keyboard playing (I tried it and it doesn't work) you are likely getting latency in the 300ms and longer ranges.... with a dedicated recording interface, it is very possible to get to 10ms or less and that, for all intents and purposes is real time.

that's right - it doesn't have anything to do with the keyboard or the MIDI connection - it's the soundcard and its drivers.  check my website for some recommendations

Oh.....that makes sense. I have a HP DV-5 1388NR/US. I guess while I am just learning I won't worry about it. However in the future I need to consider updating the soundcard amongst other things I suppose. Will check out the websites you suggested.

    Thanks again!
