What Registry Cleaner / Tune Up App?
Hi guys, I'm looking for a small footprint registry cleaner and system tuner that doesn't operate as a service and doesn't stay resident in memory when not running. Has anyone come across any decent shareware or commercial stuff? Thanks, Martin

I've got a couple of things I use. Registryfix (regsitryfix.com) Works great and finds just about everything. Also Innovative solutions system optimizer - this is good as you just sort out your initial settings then you just click and it does it's work. (http://www.innovative-sol.com/) I also use executive softwares diskeeper for daily defraging. Hope this is what you were after Nigel

Google Ccleaner, cleans your C drive of all the temporary garbage, you can select what you want removed before a scan, it also cleans the registery of unused entries from previous installs / de-installs and its FREE!!! Its also been recommended by staff members / reviewers for sound on sound magazine (uk)

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out CCCleaner - it looks pretty good, and for free can't complain I've also just ordered Diskeeper - I think I'm having problems with perfectdisk. The only worry I have is that Diskeeper is automated, and therefore stays resident in memory *doing things* - can this be switched off? Cheers, Martin

Diskeeper's settings are fully adjustable - you can set it to do what you want or just turn it off etc. I leave mine set so it automaticlly defrags every night - never been a problem Nigel

Here's what I use (in order): 1. CCleaner (Reg scan first, then "Cleaner", and then Reg scan) http://www.ccleaner.com/ 2. Wise Registry Cleaner* http://www.wisecleaner.com/ 3. Auslogics Registry Defrag** http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag * I have tried Wise Disc Cleaner, but found it to be clumsy and complicated, although that was one or two versions ago. However, I do not use it nor can I recommend it. ** Looks like they have a disc defragmenter too, but I have yet to try it. I have compared what these three apps do in tandem to what professional ($) apps do, and they work as well or better than the ones I compared them to. For disk optimization, I use PerfectDisk 8, after having seen it recommended on the RME forum by several folks. This is a very nice application that really speeds up your drive, as long as you configure it properly. If you don't tweak it a bit, it won't do much more than the Windows defrag utility. Good luck! -mr moon

I also use the Auslogics disk defrag, and it's pretty good. It seems fairly efficient (both fast and thorough), and it's also free. One thing I noticed with CCleaner is that you want to run the Reg scan/fix multiple times, until the scan brings up no new items. (It seems that some problems get "masked" and don't appear until the others are removed.)

ccleaner is pretty much a safe bet as said before , it's careful the way it works. It never has caused me a problem and I used it from the start. you can trial this also > http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ BUT it did delete a hidden file from my dragon natural speaking, so ended up reinstalling that as a result. the ones that are "free" are free to scan, normally have a very nice interface, but the code is more important. They only scan, but to find errors want you to buy em. I avoid them ones like the plague, as they are better at putting stupid pop ups on the screen and being a pain to uninstall.
