I bought Murine Ear Wash hoping to cure this unending tinnitus. So far no luck, but that's probably because I've only done it once.

I've never heard of ear wax causing tinnitus, are you serious?? Never had wax problems myself, though.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hey Greg - I hate to break it to you but usually, tinnitus is with you for life.

I've had it in my left ear, more or less permanenetly since 2004.

I've had trips to audiology, an MRI scan, endless syringing & drop treatment with absoluterly zero effect on it.

You DO learn to live with it, I don't really notice it unless it's really quiet, or someone mentions it - like now

The good news is that it hasn't affected my ability to record or mix (my mixes suck as much now as they did years ago!!! )
Ok, that's not exactly true just don't let it get you down.

Remember, we don't hear with our ears, we hear with our brain. Tinnitus is caused by nerve damage so no amount of meddling with your ears is going to fix it.

I read that excessive ear wax buildup could be a cause of tinnitus. This is something I actually searched online, webmd; you guys are so good at it that I don't have to do much searching.
It listed other possible causes and does state that it is often permanent.
My non-stop tinnitus started just a few months ago; I've had occasional bouts with it through the years, but it was always temporary before now.

That's the part I don't understand. It makes sense that it's nerve damage, but on the other hand I thought tinnitus was due to actual damage to the ear apparatus--calcification or scarring due to prolonged abuse or something like that. Maybe there are different kinds of tinnitus, just like there are different kinds of blindness (ocular or nerve).

If it were a simple case of a microphone not working, we could easily figure out if the problem was in the mic (eardrum) or the preamp (nerves) by swapping cables & mics & preamps. But with the human ear how can they have any way of knowing what's causing the noise?

An overview of tinnitus:

http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/understanding-tinnitus-basics

I seem to be in several of the causatory categories; old, loud music, perforated ear drum, loud noise in the work place, and excessive ear wax.

Re:What a f***ing disaster! I've gone almost completely deaf 2009/11/26 04:36:28 (permalink)
My tinnitus started after successive ear infections over several months.

First one erar, then the other, then back again, and so on, ad nauseum.

When the infections finally stopped, I was left with permanent ringing in the left ear and my G.P. at the time was less than helpful - he wouldn't even refer me to audiology (he said "they don't have a magic solution to yuor problem", I said "but they have more sophisticated equipment than what you've got - all you've got its a torch!")

So I changed G.P.'s and the new guy immediately referred me - not that it did any good mind you.

I had endless tests, including an MRI scan, and it turns out my hearing isn't too bad for a 55 year old who's listened to way too much loud music over the years, with only a slight diminuition in the left ear over the right.

I was well pee'd off at the time, thinking that it would put paid to my musical aspirations, but I perservered with it, tried to ignore it more & more - and by & large, this strategy does have some success.

It's definitely worse at certain times of the day. Lunchtime/Afternoon it seems to peak, and again late evening.

Or when I start talking about it!

No. I'm still applying the olive oil 4 times a day and I'm booked in for a syringing on Monday morning.

The talk of tinnitus is interesting. For the last few weeks I've noticed "ringing" in my ears at night when I go to bed leading up to my completely blocked ear a few days ago.

My tinnitus sounds like a herd of crickets, frogs and cicadas.  For years I thought the little buggers were stalking me.

Hah!

Mine sounds like someone has swept a sine wave, way, way up almost at the top of my range.

It's not particularly loud, but it's there all the time.

Went for the syringing and they refused to do it on account of it now being infected!!

I've now got to wait for another 8 days plus my right ear's blocked now!

Oh well. At least I'm balanced now.

Thanks.

Dam that's bad luck Jeff! Going by this thread it seems that extra virgin olive oil, hydrogen peroxide and garlic bread are all good for fixing these problems. Why not try them all at once. It's bound to work!! You know. If in doubt, give it a clout and all that.

Hi,

I don't know if it is a disaster for me, but having had open eye surgery to place a piece of plastic in the back of the eye for a detached retina ... has not exactly been fun ... the headaches I live with these days because the eyes are so different and I can't see something ... are not fun at all ...

It hasn't stopped my writing, but it has slowed down some things ... I used to play tennis a lot and had 2 small trophies for my play ... and I have not handled a racket for 6 months now (this year) ... and have not been able to play the competitive tennis that I used to ... and promptly put on 30 lbs!

I have to admit that if I lost part of my sight I did not lose the inner side of things that is nuttier than ever ... and sees more than ever! ... and in the old days of Santa Barbara we had this fiend that used to hitchhike to Van NUys to go to Moby Disk and get the new Klaus Schulze, or Tangerine Dream ... or something else ... and get this ... he was blind! And used to laugh at us because he could get around his place in the dark and we couldn't!
