What am I doing up at this time?

Well, I did go to bed. And just as I was falling asleep, my printer decided to come out of hibernation and start cleaning itself. The shock probably took 5 years off my life. Way too spooky for me. One of these days I'm going to read the goddamn manual and make sure it never happens again.

Nothing to worry about, really. My cat does the same thing. Just set it to go off at 8AM and you'll be fine.

Ah for crying out loud it's just a nightmare!! Go back to sleep!!!

    Seriously;
I remember my printer came with an annoying software; Monitoring (or whatever it's called) that installs itself without the option to not, and that particular component of the software could not easily be removed. But I eventually removed it which involved deeper system tweaks, quite a lot of coffee and anti-stress medication. But I survived, I'm OK, it's all good!

First, don't sleep in the office... . I know, I know...

I can't sleep under any circumstances so I use meatonin and muscle relaxers to get to sleep. A muscle relaxer will help anyone go to sleep and most have a really short halflife so you don't wake up groggy. Benadryl is a bad option, you'll feel groggy almost all the next morning (Tylenolol PM etc). I'd try to keep a few muscle relaxers on hand. 1/4 tab (1mg) of zanaflex will knock you out long enough to get back to sleep when something like this happens if you are not used to it. Then again, if I don't get sleep I am totally useless. IT used to be that I could go on little or no seep but those days are long gone.

When I was younger I didn't need anything but as I got older pain arrived and sleep fled away.
I also use one of those "sleep machines" for white noise, it really helps... it is sort of like riding in a car. It may not "sound" like it would help but it really does. I got one years ago to block out some neighbor's dog that would bark in the night. If I hear a dog barking in the night, I get mad and then despite myself I begin to listen for it and get madder every time I hear it. I carry one on every road trip now.

Take a nap... dream a dream.

I have tinnitus when it's quiet so white noise is great. Luckily I have a large air cleaner in the room which does the job perfectly. In the summer the AC is going as well so it's like a freaking airplane, lovely.

The trouble is I keep forgetting to turn my printer off after using it. It goes into standby pretty quickly so I have no reminders. This is not the first time a printer has freaked me out in the small hours. My last printer suddenly decided to start printing something at 3am and woke me up with a start. I was spooked out beyond words and was terrified at the thought of what would be waiting for me on the paper when I got out of bed to look. "I AM WATCHING YOU" or a photo of someone with horns or something. Luckily it was just a tax form. Which, to be fair...

I think if I had a partner who didn't clean herself it would be time to start looking further afield.

One of the freakiest thing that's ever happened to me...

Summer of 1990, IIRC. I had made a tape of John Lennon songs, Beatles-era stuff, recorded directly from vinyl to cassette.

I went to bed at night a popped it in and I was soon off in a semi-conscious state. The last song was All You Need is Love, and as it started fading out, out of nowhere this very loud voice came out, masking the music. I woke up w/ my heart pounding in my chest wondering where that came from. Stopped the tape. Hit rewind. There it was again!

I could never figure out what it was. It was a new tape and I'd never heard such interference in recordings before, nor did I ever hear anything similar after. I kept that tape for years, to a point where I totally got used to the interference during the fade out and it's almost as if something's missing when I hear the unaffected recording...

As for what it was saying, I couldn't figure that out either. Sounded like "Ay Ta Tay Ta Taw (short pause) Ta Taw!!!"

I've never been inclined to rely on supernatural explanations - I'm sure there is a 100% rational explanation - CB Radio interference or whatever. So I never really bothered w/ it. But that first time I heard it was certainly intense.

Craig, that right there is some funny s***.

And Sharke my girlfriends printer does that all the time.
Sometimes it'll go off 2 or 3 times in a night, then it'll go weeks without making a sound.
If it would go off every night it would be ok but the randomness scares the hell out of me.

    I think her's is a Brother printer.

My printer (a high-end color laser) behaves itself very well, but if I leave my Thrive tablet powered on in the charging stand with the screen off, it will occasionally turn the screen on (maybe when it receives an update or an email?).  Although it turns the screen back off right away, having that sudden blast of light in the middle of the night can be just as disturbing as your printer!  I have to remember to cover it when I leave it that way.
