What am I missing?

Hi there,
I need to speed up an audio clip just like the old days: play it back at double speed just like tape.  With the octave pitch change and all.  All I can find in Sonar is the ability to stretch and/or pitch change.  I just want to render a new clip that plays back at double speed.
Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks!
Rob Cathcart

Oddly, this can't be done (and I've enquired about it a few times in the past).

In fact, I often want to do the reverse. Take a fast beat and then slow it down so that it plays back an octave down in twice the time.

In the end, I just had to load the sample into Kontakt (or EnergyXT, or something cheaper, even SFZ might do the trick), play back the sample an octave higher or lower and render the output onto a new track.

It would be nice if SONAR had an option that would let you stretch a clip such that the playback rate changes like 'the good old days' without employing timestretching algos when you don't necessarily want the pitch to stay the same.

There is another (non-destructive) method that springs to mind.

    1. Set the project tempo to the clip tempo (if you know it?).
    2. Turn the clip into a Groove Clip (CTRL-L)
    3. (SONAR shouldn't distort or chop up the clip too badly at this point)
    4. Open Clip Properties (Alt-Enter)
    5. In the "Groove Clip" section, HALF the beats in the clip (i.e., if it's 16, set it to 8)
    6. Set "Pitch Semitones" to +12
    7. In the Loop Construction view, set "No Slices" and drag the threshold down until there are no slices (otherwise you may get nasty pops and clicks)

Cello (Sonar Bonus content) sped up (MP3 ~260k)

Otherwise, I fear you will have to use a sampler/rompler to change the rate and duration manually (and destructively).

If your audioclip isn't too huge, drag it into the DropZone softsynth.  Then you can play it across the keyboard, including an octave up.

If you're using Sonar, then you should definitely pick up a copy of Sound Forge. It appears in your tools menu, and you can do stretching, and a lot of other functions, easily. The pitch shifter in Sound Forge has a check box and a graphical display and it's simple to do exactly what you want. I've seen legal copies on Ebay for as low as 25.00.

    Thanks for the input!
I'll check these options out asap.
I agree it should be a normal function.

Its highly doubtful that those are legal copies for $25. Its a $300 program.

Liquidation companies blow out software all the time on Ebay. Perfectly legitimate products, but usually not the latest version. I've been paying below the street rate for years. You have to know who to buy from, and by reading the feedback you can tell if it's legitimate or not since people will leave negatives for warez.

I'm still on 8, and have been for years now because it works fine with Sonar. My friend bought from this guy, and it was a fully legal copy. 19.08 with shipping:

Doesn't "Process - Length" do just what the OP wants? You can choose whether the audio is stretched or not.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

No. Audio is either not altered at all, or it is stretched/compressed with pitch preservation.
