What am I not doing that I can't hear Session Drummer?

What am I not doing that I can't hear Session Drummer?

I've been going thought the tutorials for Sonar Producer. I'm able to hear
my play-back and record though my Presonus FirePod, both audio/midi.

But when I open Session Drummer, open a program file,
I see the file playing, but I'm not able to hear the drums
play-back. What am I not configuring to get sound?

Thanks,
Michael

Did you insert it as a soft synth and have your MIDI out point to SD2?

Yes, I inserted it as a soft synth, but will have to double check the midi out?

I see you have a good sense of humor. Did you load a drum kit into SD 2?

Did you press play...J/K Did you see if it plays when you drop and drag a groove into its midi track.

hmmm, baffling. Since you see the drums playing you obviously have a midi pattern loaded in SD2. CJ was reffering to dragging that pattern to the midi track. In SD2, the row it says MIDI theres a little eighth note, click on that and drag it to your midi track. A clip should appear there. Try that.
Also, the obvious, are the mutes off, in both SD2 and the tracks it is loaded on. Also, is your audio out pointing to a viable bus, i.e. master or even to your soundcards main output? Check volume levels too. All little things, I know, but sometimes we miss the obvious looking for something else. i know I have.

What is this "program file?" Is it another MIDI file other than what you recorded and played back?

The flagship Cakewalk synths behave poorly (IMO) when dealing with MIDI files. They can shut off just like you are describing with no obvious indication that they did so.

If this is an imported MIDI file, it may have messages that are not handled well. To look for these, you can open Views/Event List and edit out the messages such as RPN's, NRPN's, etc. or you can use a MIDI filter to filter all such messages out.

    Good luck!

    Regards,
    Dave Clark

Do you see any activity in the SD2 interface (as if there's drumming going on - lights blinking whenever a drum is hit). ?

Yes, I see activity. I can click on any drum pad also, and see it light up. I just can't hear it. I know it has something
    to do with assigning/configuring it.

    Thanks

If you are seeing activity, it means that there is data going through the synth, and it doesn't really matter if that data is coming from an internal to SD2 midi pattern, a pattern that you dragged out of SD2 to the track view, a midi loop you loaded into a midi track, or something you played inyourself with a pad surface, keyboard, or edrum kit. If you see activity, data is getting to the synth. So now why isn't the synth output getting to your speakers?

    Two options:

    1. Under each drum icon in SD2, there is a number - this is the virtual output that drum is going out. depending on how you inserted the synth and how you have the audio tracks coming back in the track view, these numbers may be different than "1", which is the default single output.

    2. On the Audio track(s) that SD2 returns to, do you see signal? Is signal getting routed from these audio tracks to your physical outputs either directly or through a bus or busses, such as drums and or/master?
