What are you guys using for string sounds?
As the subject says, what are you guys using for your string sounds? What program does a good job of realistic enough sounding strings which will be in context of a rock mix? Thanks guys!

I use the East West libraries but I doubt they do well in a fock mix. Never tried it.

I don't think it matters its how you model the sounds and layer them. With the right reverb, you can get a good 3d shaped sounding strings.

Depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you need lush legato strings - consider Miroslav Philharmonic. Also you can currently get Sonivox strings with a good discount. These have multiple articulations and are played with some kind of "rock attitude" for the lack of better description. Sonokinetic Ostinato Strings or NI Session Strings have unique phrase engines and are easy to use, providing great results. If you have ST3, there are some sweet strings too.

I agree with dappa1. The heart of Rock is the Guitar and Bass... the other strings mere trim.

I'm still using 20 years old Edirol Orchestra DXi / VSTi along with Roland SR-JV80-02 Orchestral card in my JV1010. Still give me those killer string sound anytime. The more you know their character, the more you learn how to deal with them and manipulate them to suite your need. Anyway, for me talking about "realistic" is more about how do you sequence & understand how orchestra works in pieces.

If you have a little money to spend, consider Cinematic Strings. I think they're going going for 300.00. A great string orchestra, and super easy to use. Uses the free Kontakt Player. But, as has been pointed out, for Rock, strings are not as important and you certainly can get by with less.

Just remembered something: If you have Dim Pro, you have some strings there. first, Garritan Pocket Orchestra. A curious thing about that, the inst's sound better in that than in original GPO. Second, Dim Pro has its own set of full strings. Each group (violins, cellos, etc). The high violins sound especially good, I use them now and then, and I do classical. you should check them out.

If you know how to write music - and I mean you understand enough theory to write legato strings etc - then you can't go past Notion by Presonus. The sounds aren't the best in the business, but you can replace those sounds with a higher quality string library down the track - although I never have, because I believe if you know enough audio engineering techniques you can squeeze the sound into something more than passable. Even better you get full orchestral library. In fact, I write out all my pieces in Notion and then either import the midi in for drums, or import the audio files into Sonar if it's strings or brass. What I love about doing this way is you can really make the virtual instruments feel like a real person has played them, which is because you can write in dynamics and use the humanize function to push and pull the time. And Notion is only about 150 bucks Oz.

I use Independence for filler strings and full orchestral. For different articulations I have a few Kontakt instruments along with session strings pro. Also, there's hardware with 5 Kurzweil modules and a Roland JV 1020 with expansion cards.

I use EastWest, Dim Pro, Native Instruments, and Aria strings, depending on articulation needs and section/solo needs, etc. In my experience, no single collection fits the bill for all situations. In any case, for rock or otherwise, I suggest you voice and play string parts as their own separate instruments, meaning don't just stick them on as a layer to a piano, but rather, record and voice them with their own distinct parts, to sound more realistic. In addition to the above suggestions take a look at Indiginus Solid State Symphony. Pretty good for a synth sound and it doesn't cost much.

I have been using a combination of several libraries ranging from Philharmonik 2 to some of the new strings in HALionSOnic 3. I love the Sonivox (Sonic Implants) Strings which I have used in their SoundFont format and they sound great. Recently I have picked up Albion ONE and Output Analog Strings which I have not yet had a chance to install as I am trying to figure our my VST/Sample storage management.

Hmm, I used the included SI Strings Section for a while, sounds as good as any I ever used and lots of ways to tweak it,,.. but then I decided,, I actually hate strings on pop music! Reminds me of the 70's.. So now I use different cool sounding Poly synths / Pads that don't even try and sound like real strings. Poly synths are considered vintage ya know! Forget those stings, been way overdone, start playing with those synths My Fav is the Ultra Analog Session try Bank 4- Pads- patch 11-Poly

My favorite so far is LASS, although they are not cheap or light on computer resources. They sometimes take some effort to program depending on what you want to do, but I've found them quite versatile and a solid choice for most needs. If you have money to invest and want to buy one library, that would be my top pick to check out. Listen to comparisons against Hollywood Scoring Strings, though, and see if you like that better. I haven't tried Hollywood Scoring Strings, which I've been told is very good.
I've also used Cinestrings Solo and East/West Symphonic Orchestra. Symphonic Orchestra is okay, but it's a pretty old library and just doesn't have much life to my ear compared to other libraries out there. Plus you don't get solo instruments out of it.

I use East West Symphonic Orchestra almost entirely for strings. Where you run into problems with inexpensive VSTs are in the articulations. The attack, release, etc are not right, they sound really fake and unnatural. East West also has Keyswitches along with other settings. You can switch between articulations while playing that will make them sound real.

For rock, I find myself always going back to the old Roland U110/U220/CM64 string sound as it kind of lies between a mellotron and a "real" string sound. It's also not too thick so it fits in the mix well. For more realistic strings, I use either the SI String Section or the Sonivox Orchestral Companion Strings. M.

The free included Cakewalk Studio Instruments Strings is all that you probably need for pop/rock backing tracks. Next step up for cheap might be the Sonivox Orchestral Strings, available for $29.99 until April 2nd. Garritan Personal Orchestra 5 is now 50% off at $74, until April 11th. If money is no object, and you seek perfection or illumination, then the sky is the limit after that!
