What are you looking forward to in 2012?

2011 was a year when I made a lot of new acquisitions, there were certainly a lot of bargains to be had (for me the Kirk Hunter group buy was the highlight). I wonder what we will be tempted with in 2012.

Music Lab's promised updates to Real Strat, Real Guitar and Real LPC could be very interesting.  I have Real Strat and like the low footprint and the key switched lead articulations in particular but its getting a bit long in the tooth and in many ways has been eclipsed by the Kontakt offerings from Orange Tree and Indigunus.

And, Orange Tree are working on updates for their guitars, I just hoping they will not need Kontakt 5.

Sample Tank 3 could be interesting.

Hopefully Hollow Sun will continue the wild and wacky Music Lab Machine series.

What have Tooktrack got up their sleeves? A teaser seemed to suggest a piano? It may be pie in the sky but what about a Latin / Asian / African percussion for Superior?

Native Instruments are bound both produce something brilliant and do something alienate more of their previous customers.

I am beginning to give up on seeing 64 bit versions of Minimonsta and M-Tron Pro from GForce, Both important VSTi for me, I have my fingers crossed for 2012.

SampleTekk has had a bit of trade from me in 2011, but now they are going to need some new products if they want to maintain a revenue stream, Is there any one who hasn't bought all they want already?

And finally - Kirk Hunter Concert Winds anyone?

My number one would be 64bit versions of all G Forces synths! Now I'm fully 64bit  windows 7 and Sonar X1 I have had to Jbridge them to get them to work smoothly, so yes, 64bit versions please.

I made a decision to invest in Mach5, so I want ALL sample library producers to offer Mach 5 versions as well as Kontakt - then when all newly released sample libraries will only work in the latest version of Kontakt (5 at the moment, probably 6 /7  in a few months depending on NI's desire to make more sales!), instead of being FORCED to purchase yet another NI upgrade (that in most instances offers most users very little) we can just ignore them! Now that would be nice...I have a love hate relationship with NI - some of their products are exceptional - unfortunately they seem to drop these - Kore,  B4 and Spectral Delay come to mind - and the less said about their support(!!!!) and very dubious marketing tactics the better.

Love Hollow Sun and love their new products and pricing structures.

There are a couple more sample library producers who seem to be going this route as well, cheaper less all encompassing products - for instance I just downloaded AudioThing's new Soundscapes Vol 1 (yesterday) Only had a little play but it seems really good and was EIGHT DOLLARS - which is what I want to pay - so more sample library producers please follow!

IK Multimedia - I have a lot of their products and am awaiting to see what upgrades will happen this year - obviously Sampletank and I suppose all the products that use that engine (Sample-Tron, Philharmonic etc) - I just hope they will not Native Instrument us and skin us alive for upgrades!

64 bit Addictive Drums (plus a better librarian!)

BDF Eco 64 bit and a better librarian as well!

EzDrummer needs an upgrade, seems to falling behind a little to me, which is  a shame

Finally, Sonar X1 Expanded - PLEASE just iron out a few of the little instabilities / bugs that are still there before offering us any new features (most of which have little relevance to the majority of existing users I would have thought - have you ever used beatscape for instance?). I like the idea of adding value to Sonar by offering "add ons" that I can choose to include (or not) - my wish here would be useful things - innovative synths / drum machine (not just for dance music), upgrades to Midi implementation, improvements to features like Track Manager - instead of just showing what's on each track, why not also highlight active tracks and where they are panned - most of us have limitations on screen viewable size, so using the console view as it should be used is difficult - a little track manager window which just showed where things were would be really helpful (especially for Laptop users I would think).

Well that's about it I think

2012 is the year that I concentrate on polishing my WIPS, sketches and experiments with all the new toys purchased last year with this years budget (I agree, it was a great year for purchases). I know more about mixing now than I ever did, which is still only a fraction of what I need to know to consistently achieve good results. If it wasn't for the fact that the more I learn, the more I find out I don't know much, I'd say things are moving along nicely.

I'd forgotten UAD - do you use these regularly - the last few times I've tried to use any of my UAD plug ins in 64bit Sonar, they have been so unstable I have ended up deleting them!

Not one problem in over 5 months now. I do not have one song without at least four UAD plugs on it.

Hoping for and fully expecting: a ton of excellent third party preset libraries for DIVA.

Hoping for without a lot of optimism: a much improved Harmor manual and a bunch of third party preset libraries ... this is a fabulous synth that's way under most people's radar, IMO.

Hoping for (but only in my dreams): a Sonar release with beau coup enhancements in the tempo view.

Wow what a fun topic. I will try to keep this under 150 pages ;-)

I am really really looking forward to the newest Spectrasonics offerings cause Stylus RMX needs an upgrade and I appreciate the tremendous vision that Eric Persing has had so far. Whatever they do is likely going to be good.

More integration of external control of soft synths with iPad's as controllers. Omnisphere is leading the way on this one and Alchemy has an iPad app (boo that is is another $25 and the Omnisphere one is free and better)

A less CPU intensive version of Diva. In divine mode it is breathtaking but it is not multi-processor aware and it eats a CPU alive on a lot of patches. For that matter....Alchemy could use some optimizations also.

Whatever new stuff Sean puts out from ValhallaDSP. Just such good work and for a good price also. Just got ValhallaShimmer the other day and stuck it on an Ivory 2 piano track. Holy crap!!!! Ditto also for ValhallaUberMod.

Steven Slate 4 drums package without bugs, with grooves, host sync, and 64 bit

The newest MusicLab offerings and hope that they don't screw me on the upgrades for the guitar packs.

A free update to Kontakt that completely redoes their output routing. It is the spawn of the devil!!! Ugghhhh. They are like Microsoft....just chronically unaware of how unuseable their product sometimes is.

More cool Nexus 2 libraries. Would love a library of nothing but voices and choirs.

Rock solid stable versions of Sonar. I know they are trying. Enough said.

I am looking forward to :

    64 bit Jamstix

Hollow Sun's forthcoming sample set from the modular system they picked up.

Maybe a new version of ESC.

    Upgrading my DAW.

Seeing if Boss comes out with a worthwhile successor to the GT series at NAMM.

    Leaving my current employer.

Definitely looking forward to 64 bit UAD.  That just might push me over the top to get a UAD Quad.   I don't think I've been able to use more than 1 UAD plugin in a project since I switched to 64 bit.  So frustrating.

Have you tried eliminating (by freezing) all of the VST and VSTi combinations as the culprit?

I have absolutely no trouble with bitbridge in 64bit SONAR in W7. My typical soft synths are Toontrack and a few others though. As far as other VSTs, I use PSP, NUgen, Slate, Nomad Factory, Sonitus and others without any problems. I doubt that having 2 Quads is the answer but my discaimer is I do have dual Quads.

64-bit native UAD plugins?  64-bit Wave Plugins?  I seriously doubt that could ever possibly happen within the next 5 years (if at all).  To me that is a bad idea for my saturated DAW anyway.

... even as PCIe busses get more and more obsolete. UA will likely bridge their PCIe cards to firewire and/or USB-3, and keep it *outboard*.

That my friends will be much better, anyway, freeing your native DSPs up for your synths and allowing your UAD dongle-oid to go on the road.

    Unfortunately,

I wouldn't hold my breath for waves-64 bit either ... there aren't any beta tests appearing yet, iirc.  Duh! Of course Waves won't be 64 bit anytime soon!

Waves may find themselves in a class-action lawsuit instead, ... for assuredly promising us customers Waves 64-bit VST plugins.

    Fortunately:

Maybe Waves will learn from UA (and not lose a lot of money in settlement claims)

Forget impossible 64-bit natives and just make an 'outboard dongle-loid' PCIe card or USB-3 card instead ...

Finally: Waves and UA can unite as one company to confer their plugins via their own powerful dongle-loids ... and send iLok-2 to Hades once and for all.

Yep, I received that e-mail at the end of December where they stated that the 64-bit version of the UAD plugs will be delivered in 2012.  That one will be a bit bonus for me as I use UAD quite a bit on mixes.

I'd love to say IK ARC 64-bit working on my PC as my "looking forward" to wish, but I've submitted a ticket with them over six months ago and sent them a crash report.  Since then it has been silence.  I've even updated the ticket multiple times with "Any status?".  Yet to hear anything from them.  Oh well, live and learn.

64-bit native UAD plugins?  64-bit Wave Plugins?  I seriously doubt that could ever possibly happen within the next 5 years (if at all).
I wouldn't hold my breath for waves-64 bit either ... there aren't any beta tests appearing yet, iirc.  Duh! Of course Waves won't be 64 bit anytime soon!

I believe that UAD already announced via e-mail to customers that they plan to have 64 bit available this year for free
If I'm reading Phillip correctly, by native he means "without a card". To us UAD users we see it as 64bit dll's.

Yep, I received that e-mail at the end of December where they stated that the 64-bit version of the UAD plugs will be delivered in 2012.

Confirmed here too. I received an email form UAD promising 64-bit dll's sometime in 2012.

I also received the e-mail, but I didn't want to assume that everyone did..

I did not receive the email, nor do I any idea what advantage that would confir on their 32-bit "Powered Plugin" DSPs.  I see nothing on their site on this subject (now).

Its true some of you have the old UAD-1 ... that need to be upgraded to UAD-2, with its "64-bit mode" driver, iirc.

I have the latest UAD-2 Omni 6.1 PCIe QUAD card running seamlessly in Sonar 64 8.5.3. with this.  Yes, bouncing tracks is a bit slower with UAD, in my experience (... but no where near as slow as the Waves-JBridge concoctions I have going).

... the 32-bit "dll" powered plugins (Bapu, Winsurfer, and all) :):):):) ... they don't seem to even effect CPU consumption or memory ... the DSPs run off the PCIe quad card my friends (a beautiful thing, IMHO)

OTOH, my UAD (32-bit) plugins get *moody* around Melodyne (hahahah!) ... Melodyne-64 being a renowned Sonar crasher (around here).  (no Melodyne upgrades for me, LOL)

So why would you guys conceive of wanting 64-bit dlls again (seeing the UAD plugins already have their DSP *allotments* on a duo or quad card)?  (You've already indicated that UAD native plugins aren't what you want).

My answer is this: The 32bit dll's needs to be bit/j-bridged. Any interfaces/bridges that can be eliminated are a good thing even if I am not having problems that I'm aware of. JMO

Just hope it doesn't require me to install iTunes on my computer to make it work.
Isn't it absolutely amazing that a program with such deep market penetration could be so stunningly aweful?  If iTunes weren't a required (and free) companion to the iPod, et. al., can you imagine they'd ever sell a single copy (at least to Windows users)?  It's not that it's got a few annoying tendancies, either.  It's crap through and through.

+1 Exactly my thoughts, I would like to get to the point where no more bridging is necessary

+1 ... (I had no idea any bit-or-j-bridging was even going on with the UAD stuff, until now.  ... that could be a reason I get some minor glitches with excess UAD instances in Sonar 64)
