What color floor makes the room look bigger?

The dry wall is almost done. The room looks as small as it really is now.

I gotta pick a floor that helps make it seem bigger.

I'm planning on white walls.

Suggestions for floor color?

Thanks.

Lighter tones make rooms look larger according to the missus.

Darken the end walls if you want to shorten the room vs it's width.  The space impression is created by the vertical surfaces as that is where the eye is mostly falling.

Darker flooring is fine if your ceilings are light the height impression is affected by floor and ceiling not so much the feeling of space.

If you really want to cheat the eye on the flooring then put a 12" or 18" carpet runner around the floor edges in pale cream then use a darker contrasting colour in the remaining island for context.

Always pretend to listen to women when it comes to decorating, then do the 'right' thing.

There are lots of cheap 3D room designers on the market these days so you can thoroughly visualise a scheme for a space before commiting to material costs and effort.

Many bigger paint outlets even have them in store or on-line.

Re:What color floor makes the room look bigger? 2012/05/03 07:47:14 (permalink)

My real problem is that the ceiling is low and the width is only 11'.

The length is pretty ok!

It is what it is... but I'd like it to make a good impression when you walk in.

I thought about paneled walls but opted for drywall as it is quick easy and painless to have done. If I did wood walls or ceiling I'd have to do it myself to get the finish quality I'd want.

I'm doing all the trim wood work, including fabricating a "non-parallel glass" studio window from scratch, so I just couldn't face the responsibility of doing the walls and ceiling as well.

We have wood floors in our house and the dog destroys them with his sandy paws.

I have carpet in the studio and I hate it... it's a dirt collector.

So, I think I am going with porcelain tile and then I'll use throw rugs if it seems too reflective.

I'm not even going to worry about sound until I place huge bass traps in the corner.

Right now I'm just thinking about appearances.

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

You could use ARC for a quick an dirty fix on the sound.

Concentrate on making your man-cave an expression of your pure self.  It's probably the only space you'll have that you can personalize to a level of 100% Mike McQ

If you go for a tiled floor make sure you put in a nice size drum riser you can move around.  Nothing worse than having to retrieve a kick drum that's slid to the other side of the room during each take.

I don't want to seem like I'm trying to make you envious or anything... but when you drive through the nappy chain link gate down our little dirt driveway it's kinda obvious that you are entering another dimension.

Even the jobbers that help with the construction comment that it is a little piece of paradise.

It's a old wooden shack we bought really cheap but we treat the inside/outside as a neat and tidy artist's compound so the effect is holistic. The best part is that several of our neighbors live in a similar fashion so we have an *artsy* "community" out here under the trees.

Put mirrors on one wall and the room will instantly look much bigger.  Although they will reflect sound as well, so that might complicate the acoustical treatment.

I agree, light colors on the floor will make it look larger. If you use carpet, I'd avoid a solid color. Instead, choose a light overall color with a variety of darker fibers blended in it.  Stains and dirt don't show as easily.

In all sincerity, I am guessing it would be hard for someone with your background to imagine how magical an older community, such as what I'd expect to find in England, seems to a person who grew up on the frontiers of USA concrete block and 2x4 surburbia.

As a native Floridian my experience has been informed by never ending newness. There is a stunning lack of "tradition" to enjoy and use as a reference.

You could put curtains over the mirrors that could be opened or closed depending on how you feel.  Big room or smaller room.

I have a few smaller rooms in the house and going with those lighter colors really did help them to look larger and gave a brighter overall mood to the spaces.

The best of both worlds would be to have an  easily maintained floor and then put a large throw rug over it.  If the throw gets gross you can take it out to be cleaned  or pitch it and get another one.

I think the dirt in the carpet of my studio adds another dimension to my sound,so I don't intend to go too crazy cleaning it.

Funnily enough the actual premises where I live is an apartment above a General Store set on a half-acre concrete slab annexed to a tourist trailer park.  It's pure bleak Americana road movie from the outside.  The vibe inside is well insulated from all that though.

It's most of the surrounding towns and villages that date from the Norman invasion in 1066 though so there's plenty of olde worlde to sample, and plenty of bleak and barren shingle marshland, and of course the ocean too...

So, I think I am going with porcelain tile and then I'll use throw rugs if it seems too reflective.

Small tiles will make the space seem larger.

I gotta pick a floor that helps make it seem bigger.
I recommend you paint a mural on the floor so that it looks like you're looking down a chasm. You can then paint (build?) a rickety wooden rope bridge where you need to walk.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Yeah good idea, if you do a scaled down version of the Sistine chapel then it won't be a case of the room looking small it will be more like you've become exceptionally awesome.

Buy three-quarter size furniture....... simples!

Or an even smaller scale, it would be like living on a strangely inverted Land Of The Giants set.

Yes to both.   You don't need to make the mirror large either, I used to have mirrored tiles alternate with sound-treatment material.  It gave the room a cool textured look while adding both light and help with echoes.  A great way to get well defused lighting is to point lights at a white ceiling and let it bounce into the room.  It disperses so you don't have any too bright areas.
