I can do it with an M-Audio Oxygen even....not that I'm recommending that. You'll get others chiming in with recommendations I'm sure, but there will be a wide range to choose from.

Yep, pretty much all of them. I use a PCR-800 as keyboard and it can be used as a controller but if it's just a CS you are after the BCF 2000 is excellent in Mackie mode. I use a MCU & XT now but used the BCF for a long time. 90% of the function of a Mackie at 10% of the price. It must be one of the best value bits of gear there is.

Sonar's own (OK, so, Roland's own)A-800 Pro keyboard. Lotsa assignable knobs, and 8 sliders as per a mixing board pre-set to control Sonar's mixer. Randy B.

Offnote, you made me Google the Novation Impulse. Looks fine. These things are all so much the same. That unit has about the same controls on the APRO series from Roland - but it's without the outstanding Roland keyboard. Those boards are pretty hard to beat. APRO can control your washing machine too. Randy B.

hehe--I beg to differ. Have me an A-800 right here, and I got it precisely because the keyboard is all Roland, anything but "crappy"--and they're full sized to boot. Don't know what you been smokin' boy, but you got your info 100% wrong. Randy B.

There are plenty of folks who bought controllers w/ Automap that ditched them because of automap (Novation Nocturn comes to mind). You may want to look into that.

You obviously never played acoustic piano if you think they're full size With regards the keys feel novation is absolutely the best in midi controllers world.

Well - I had some strange things happening with automap and the Novation Nocturn in combination with Sonar 8.5. Sometimes switching to another softsynth would not "release" the soft-synths used before, and configurations just got lost from one moment to another. Also -if my memory does not play tricks with me- there where some problems with X-ray. No plain crashes or something drastic however. I must say this experience was more then a 1 1/2 year ago with an older automap version. It is fully possible automap version 4 in combination with X1 is drasticly improved... Anyway - as I was on a budget (like a lot of people) I was searching for a cheap controller. As said - I tried the Novation Nocturn, Presonus Faderport and the Behringer BCF2000. I made my choice rather quickly. For the money nothing (in my opinion) can beat the BCF2000. Used in mackie mode (so the motorised faders get feedback) it works great. You can simply switch from general (channel strip) mode to VST-instrument and other modes can be done with a key-click. This is however depending on the budget you can spend. If you have enough budget you can opt for the more expensive controllers. I cannot give advise for those, simply because they are not in my budget range...

You're right, Offnote - they aren't full sized keys. I was looking down at them too closely and they just looked full sized. Really. And this from a guy who's played piano probably twice as long as you've been alive. --ah, senility. But the keys aren't crappy - For me, they feel much better than the Novations I tried out in our local music store. --No absolutes, there are only preferences. RB

I'm still waiting for a 'virtual keyboard' in Sonar so I can use my QWERTY keyboard or mouse for quick midi synth/drum recording. It's a very nice feature where it is available and I find myself using it a lot.

This is however depending on the budget you can spend. If you have enough budget you can opt for the more expensive controllers. I cannot give advise for those, simply because they are not in my budget range... Having gone from a BCF to an MCU, I can advise on this. Is the MCU 'better' - Yes of course it is. Is it £1000 better? IMHO not even close. It's great not having to do lots of shift button pressing and the jog wheel is very handy. There's a few functions you can't access via a BCF because there's no M2 - 4 buttons but they are the more obscure ones. I agree that IMHO there is no better value controller on the market. I got my MCU because it was at a price on ebay I'd have been daft to pass on. If someone gave me £1200 and I didn't have a controller. I'd get the BCF and spend the other £1050 on some other toys, such as a keyboard/controller. That's having used them both. My tuppence worth.....

Get this on your system. http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/loopMIDI.html Then any of the free virtual midi keyboards you can find on the net that you like will become available. Seriously, Tobias's virtual midi driver is awesome. 64 or 32 bit, assign ports on the fly, it's the best one out there free or paid. Period. It has enabled me to do things with midi my Mother would have never allowed.

I bought the A800 pro after having tried a few others including the Axion49 (which i still have) precisely because is was made by Roland as a Cakewalk keyboard. I was hoping that it would resolve the compatibility issues that i was struggling with, and I was for the most part right. there are a couple of little quirks, but i am very happy with the quality of the controller. having said that, i do not use the 8 'pads' much, as i find them too small to be very useful. i would recommend a Launchpad for doing more serious "matrix' style controlling. hope this helps. cj
Vancouver, BC visit www.chezjonesy.com. running Sonar PATINUM Producer SIXalbums and lots of tunes on-line. also, check out the Moon Tunes section for some great jam session recordings. Presonus Studiolive mixer, microKORG, A800 Pro, MS-20, guitars, basses, Yammaha DTXPLORER, M-AUDIO CX8's.

LOL! :) Space is limited here at Bub Studio's unIncorporated and this solves a lot of problems. I have a set of toy drum pads I've been using via midi and they require a loopMIDI program, but the one I'm using is kind of flaky sometimes. I'll try it out with this one from Tobias. Thanks! :)
