I had two cassette decks and a tandy mixer & reverb unit. I bounced from one cassette to the other every time I added a track. Soon got fed up though and went to a Tascam 4-track. My first Cakewalk software was a trial version (Cakewalk Apprentice?) that came with my SoundBlaster AWE32

ORIGINAL: Naren Cool that you still have your setup. About a decade ago, my Dr T disk failed, and I called the company to get a new one (I couldn't make a backup copy cause I only had one drive). I talked to a guy at Dr T who told me they had just gone out of business and were wrapping up the whole operation. I begged and pleaded for a new disk, but he just wouldn't or couldn't do it. So after that it was all PCs and Microsoft. And here we are.... -Naren Naren, Check this out... after I posted here it got me thinking and I did a bit of research. Check out these links: http://www.emulators.com/gemul8r.htm http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/atari/ http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/atari-midi/ Looks like I might be able to run some of my old software on the PC. Not sure when I'll have time to try it, but this could be pretty cool. Scott -- Scott R. The year was 1984. My audio gear consisted of: 1 Panasonic tape player (mono) 1 Stereo tapedeck/receiver with a "mic mix" input 1 Radio Shack microphone My musical instruments consisted of: 1 acoustic guitar missing a D string 1 pair of chopsticks 1 vinyl armchair to beat on 1 kerosene heater with a phone book on top to sound like a snare I did the old ping-pong method to track as many as 7 tracks before it degraded into a pile of hiss & rumble. And I was happier than I've ever been since! The good old days indeed.

Why; well it will destroy your fond memories of that stuff. If you do you will say as I did "why did I do this". I was shocked at just how bad things were. It will be better to remember the good and keep the fond memories then see the reality Beside a lot of stuff had it's own display drivers You will be stuck with the basic 16 color scheme oh well don't say I didn't warn you Don't forget to throw your mouse away too Best John

Hey John, You might be right. Although, I do remember how it was back then Dr.T's stuff was all text interfaces, etc. But I'm used to that kind of stuff. I do a lot of PC tweaking too, so DOS and text-based interfaces are still familiar. I think it might be fun to see if the stuff would actually work. I won't find out soon though because I just have too many other projects going at the moment. Thanks for the warning though! Scott -- Scott R. Started on a weird two track cassette recorder and some radio shack microphones in the late seventies. A friend and I would put scotch tape over the erase head and make surreal out of time echo effects. Mostly with our voices, all we had for instruments were a crappy bass and guitar and no amp. We made noises by scraping grill-work and banging pots together. Ah youth. I picked up my first 4 track in 1988 (a Fostex 160) when I was playing synth in a band. Later on I got a Mac SE, a little Opcode MIDI interface, and some sequencer package called Beyond. I don't remember who made that one but it was great. --JD

The year was 1987...House music was gathering pace...and this, along with Commodore 64 game music, persuaded me to give it a go.... First equipment was a Commodore 64 running Microrhythm (then I upgraded to Microrhythm+!). Anyone remember them? Both were one track drum sequencers with pretty poor sound quality but I rather like the sounds still (you can get it to run on a C64 emulator)...and a very bottom of the range Bontempi organ that had cool "chord" buttons... Learnt basic skills of making music by using this equipment to play endless cover versions of "Blue Monday" by New Order....and programmed a version on the C64 in basic which I was rather proud of... www.myspace.com/rikinrunstop www.myspace.com/runstop

I have to tax my brain on this one, going back into the late 80s... I had a Fostex 4 track. I can't remember the model, but it was a nice one with Dolby B/C, and capable of recording all 4 tracks simultaneously. The computer was an Amiga 2000, running Music-X and Deluxe Music Construction Set. I had two Synths - an Ensoniq SQ-1 and an Ensoniq SD-1. My effects consisted of a Peavey UltraVerb. I played a Strat through a Marshall JCM800/1960A, and a PBass through a Peavy 400 Series amp with a 15" Black Widow cab. And of course a couple of mics (I can't remember the make/model). I actually did some pretty decent recordings with that setup...got some tunes on the FM airwaves, won a songwriting contest, some studio time, and got to play at the county fair.

Got my first tape recorder when I was a kid in the 60's -- this cool Lloyds reel-to-reel baby. It had no capstan so the tension from the takeup reel kept the tape on the head. It may have been a piece of junk, but I had lots of fun with it. I bought a few more cheap consumer recorders over the years until about 20 years later when I got my first cheap 4-track, the Fostex X-15. My friends and I recorded some pretty good songs on it, and it's still sitting in my gear closet. When you only have four tracks to work with, you really have to think through your arrangements and production techniques. It's a lot different from working with today's technology.

I started recording in '91 using a small cassette recorder and a jam box. I would play a drum loop cassette tape on the jam box with place my cassette recorder next to the amp. A few years later I bought a fostex 4 track cassette recorder. Yes, so much has changed since back then.

A Fostex X-26 four track, a Yamaha QY-10 sequencer, a 486 PC (66MHz?) with 4Mb RAM and 400 Mb hard disk running Passport Tracks on Win 3.11, a Casio HT6000 synth (phase distortion thing), a Fender HM Strat, a little Fender amp (25 watt Sidekick Reverb), an Epiphone acoustic, a Zoom 9002 guitar multieffect and a cheap dynamic mic. Everything except the four track and the computer (they took a high end laptop and left the old desktop) were stolen from my house six years ago. I still miss the Strat.
