Scook's right... If you have THAT...you don't need anything else... you can take a FREE DAW with it's stock plugins and creat masterpieces.... Then there's the rest of us...

Equipment wise just a penny whistle, that's all but if you want to record it then it gets more complex.

To the guitars I would add 12 string and nylon string and possibly the Ricky 12. But what more did they need in the beginning? https://youtu.be/wqpygx9BRYE

What's required, in descending order of availability: - ideas
- inspiration
- motivation
- time
- freedom from distractions
- funds
[EDIT] Sorry. When I first read this thread I didn't notice that it was in the Software subforum. The question should have been "What software do we actually need..." But it's a sad fact that software is more essential to music production than guitars, drums and keyboards are these days.

The list was motivated by noticing that, especially after buying new glasses, I'm broke but that I have some version or other of almost everything on the list and maybe I don't need GAS so much as using what I have and actually learning how to make music and avoid runon sentences.

Come to think of it, we can do a hell of a lot with freebies. Add in BigCat's own stuff and you're set for samples as well. Zero expenditure.

What do you need? A good starting point would be: - 3 or 4 guitars - a bass - 2 or 3 keyboards - Control Surface - Seventy-eleven VST FX & VIs - SONAR - Komplete Ultimate - Everything from IKM - 3 amps - 6 amp sims - Mixer - a handful of mics - BiaB - Some other DAW - A Super-duper PC - Several terabytes of SSD/HD space - Off-site backup storage and tested backup process - Lifetime Groove 3 sub - Good studio monitors - Good headphones - SonarWorks - ARC System 2 - A professionally treated room - 400A electric service - Automatic backup power generator - Power conditioner Once you have all of this and have it configured, you'll be broke and divorced; qualified to write and perform The Blues and/or Country/Western. I'm not there yet, but the Deals forum is my guide

IMHO, here is an experiment to try. Lock in with what you have right now and make a goal of actually competing 4 pieces (songs, scores etc. whatever you work with) of material start to finish with just what you have now. You will probably be surprised and somewhat cured of GAS at the end of this experiment. P.S. Also helpful to stay out of the "deals forum".

It's habitual for so many to avoid what is included in a DAW and assume the FX is not up to par. That was the beauty of Reason. You couldn't go outside of the box and yet people created great stuff before REs and VST support came along. From seeing youtube videos people who use Live and FL tend to use more of the included package.

Very little needed if there is inspiration to create. Maybe a cassette recorder or a mic thru the mini phone jack if going digital. Audacity free does it all. Hard on passion of the young rock star can not be remotely met like guys like me. At peace with this reality since can honestly look myself in the eye. Thousands of dollars in state of the art plugs here, but hiding creative ability behind the self deception of having to get the right sound before I can create. Faking out myself. Glory to the kids who can rock on without the strangle of needing the latest and greatest before being able to actually deliver a cool song. John
