What do you do with old CDs and manuals
I am a legitimate, registered Sonar 4 Producer owner. I am cleaning out some junk in my house and seam to keep running across my old Pro Audio 9, Sonar 2.2 and Sonar 3 manuals and CDs. What would you guys recommend? I think I will just toss the CDs, unless someone can rrecommend some sort of CD recycling program; I've got a tone business for them. But what about the manuals. Should I just throw them out? Would anyone be interested in these old manuals? I really don't want to contribute to any piracy. But if they could help someone then they are welcome to them.

Are you nuts, The 9 cd gives you a free license to the CW mp3 encoder The 1 I don't have The 2 gives to Timeworks EQ and Compressor The 3 gives you Vsampler Just to mention what I can remember off hand. You need them all for a system rebuild. Don

And: At some point you may want to use CAL and need 9 for the help files and some of the tools. At some point you may want to create some studioware panels (such as custom tool bars) and will need 1 and 2 for the tools to build such panels. At some point you may want a particular effect that is no longer included in the newest version. And the manuals (and help files) provide additional information about stuff not in the newest manuals. And so on. J

I will probably keep the CDs. I didn't get Sonar 2XL ... so I didn't get the Timeworks stuff. I was put off with the Musician's Tool Box that came with Pro Audio 6; most of this licenses seemed to say have fun with this material but if you use it commercially you STILL need to clear it with the owners. I will definately keep the S3 CDs; I purposely ordered S3 when S4 was announced just to get vSampler, and the $79 S4 upgrade. Is there any need to keep PA9? Is this MP3 encoder license still valid? I happen to have Samplitude Master 6, which I use as my audio editor. Samp 6 will allow export to MP3. I got Samp6 for $50, I think Magix was trying to give people a sweet upgrade path; I can upgrade to Samplitude 8 Master(main audio editor) for $200 or Samplitude 8 Professional??? (new multitrack audio mixing app) for $500. Are there better (free) alternative to MP3 creation? Is there any need to keep the manuals around? I do have Sonar 4 Power so I gues my S4 manual is less of a necessity. I guess my question was... Does anyone have the need for a Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 or Sonar 2 manual? If not they will be reincarnated as some paper-good-based item. Oh yeah almost forgot... Thanks for the feedback.

ORIGINAL: wwwill Is there any need to keep the manuals around? Definitely! The Sonar 4 Eurobabble Manaul (at last replaced by the American English language edition) is the perfect object for raising my headphone mixer/amp above the desk to the preferred height. The S3 manual lifts up my first monitor to the same eye level a the first. S2, S1 and PA9 together raise the surround sound mixer control to the right height. I'd be lost without them all.

The Sonar 1 CD includes Tassman LE, which is a powerful-sounding monophonic synth. Plus you have all those loops and soundfonts that come in each CD. I'd keep them all. Old manuals can be used as furniture, building blocks, or weapons.

All the Sonar version allow you install the effects seperately from the original CDs. Soundfonts and loops can be copied directly from the original CDs. The Pro9 mp3 encoder is matter of running the upgrade process in the current version of Sonar. During the upgrade process there is a point where the original Pro9 CD must be installed to unlock the encoder. Where effects are installed can vary, unless want to know exactly where the applications are the location does not matter to Sonar. By default, some wil go into manufacturer designated directories under "c:\program files" others go into the common directories where your other cakewalk applications are located.

Keep it all. Store it in a tupperware container if you must. Mp3 from Pro Audio 9 is still valid.

Yes, poor word choice on my part. You will not need to install Pro9 to upgrade to the full mp3 encoder. The full mp3 encoder upgrade process in Sonar just asks for the Pro9 disk to be inserted into a CD drive to verify that you have a version that came with the full mp3 encoder.
