What do you think about this mix?

Hi,

I have mixed Benton Stokes' song Three minutes, using raw wav files that came with Multi-Platinum Stupid Mix Tricks video tutorial (http://multi-platinum.com.../StupidMixTricks.html) (http://www.myspace.com/bentonstokes)

www.jamadza.com/up/Benton_Stokes_Three_minutes_MIX1.mp3

How would you describe the mix? What would you suggest me to change, improve...?

I am learning how to mix, so I will appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Marek

Best Regards,
Marek

Very good song, I enjoyed all three minutes.  The mix sounds good on my monitors.  Well done.

Tracking is more then half the game IMHO, but for what it is, it sounds good.

That is true - good players, good instruments, amps, mixers, mics... are very important and also here is valid: "garbage in garbage out" :)

Here is a link to a dry rough mix - without FXs, parallel processing and doubling.
    You can compare them.

I have not done any volume automation yet, but I feel the B3 organ would benefit from some automation in some parts of the song, and also there is Banjo at the end playing an "outro" and that could be nice to have a little more "in front"...

And thank you for your praise. ;)

As you note, you have some very good source tracks. I was not going to comment on this but posting the raw mixdown gave a reference to work with.

I think you are on the right "track" so to speak with the mix, but I think you need to roll back the highs in the vocals and cymbals. The "s" are chirping (not sibilance exactly).

You have introduced a small degree of muddiness to the instrument mix in the mids around the area of the vocals.

As I always harp... be careful with compression. A song like this benefits more from dynamics than hard rock or heavy metal.

So far so good. Bit more work and you will have a nice sound.

    Cheers

    Marek,
The mix came through good on my system.  I don't have any useful crits to throw out, sounds good to me.  Nice work.
