What do you think?

Here's my latest. A bit outside of my style. Nice middle portion in there, too.

TBH the drums feel so wrong for this piece in the main sections. Kick is too busy IMO.

Vocals could be clearer (not louder, less muddy).

Ya middle bit is nice.

cool little song - the mix though - a bit messed up - very muddy. Little work on the mix - this is a definite winner.

You're probably right, bapu. I'll kill the kick a bit (my ""system"" doesn't transfer lows all too well), I figured that'd be a problem.
I have to admit this is one of my first mixes where I actually felt it was rather open and clear! Any pointers on making it less muddy? I think it make be the reverb'd sine bass and live bass in there, plus the double kicks.
Thanks for listening, guys!

Yeah, it's easy, put a High Pass filter on there and kill anything below 40 to 60 Hz. Also, look at the frequencies on the bass, and kick track, and try to carve out (notch cut) places in the kick, and bass where they compete. Also, you can use a ducking compressor on the bass to set it back a bit for the duration of the kick. Put a highpass on everything which is NOT the kick or the bass and cut it at 80Hz or higher to make room for that kick and bass. Bring the kick and bass down the middle and spread and or pan everything else which may compete, i.e., keys, strings.

Then use a MB compressor on the mains, and adjust the lows to taste.

Working on a new mix, it's going well! Thanks again for tips, guys.
Now I'm pretty new to the mutliband- I've tried it before, but I don't a have firm grip on it's use. I understand the controls, but the technique and application is where I'm stumped... It's like 5 compressors mashed with an eq...

The best way to try out a MB compressor (IMO) is to apply an instance of Ozone on the mains. It has an excellent MB compressor, in fact? All of it's capabilities are excellent... You can demo it for free, but then you have to cough it up. It's worth it though? Pretty much anybody here who is anybody uses Ozone on their master, I'd be willing to bet money on that...

I use version 5, and like the 4 band preset with widening and excitation as a starting point. There are plenty of good vids on youtube for MB Compressors, Fabfilter makes a nice one too.

Jablowmi, thanks for the link! I guess now I'm wondering... SHOULD I use it like EQ? Is the goal to, as he said, "tame" some frequencies? I don't think my ears are developed enough to hear those, nor is my... less-than-ideal... monitoring 'system' gonna give me an idea of that.

Starise, the first mix is still up at the link! Not sure why it wouldn't work. I'm hammering out the new mix with a less persistent, tight (instead of resonant) kick and better EQ shaping to clean things up.

Alright, I gave another shot at the mix. I think I need to start using my 'tools' around me..

I like the new mix. The bass needs a little brightening (got that indistinct one-note effect going on) and the hats could come down a little for the verses. Vocals are fine, right up front and clear. Try the free Voxengo Boogex on the bass to give it a little stronger presence.

Here's a creative idea: put some long reverb on the guitar and automate it so it's out for most of the song but gradually comes in during the fadeout.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I might actually pull the vocals back little bit and try to decompress the overall mix- feels a little TOO comp'd now! Then again for some reason

I'm gonna apply an LFO to define a little rhythm to the bass. There's one on there, but it's not doing enough at the moment. When you say it needs more definition, bit- are you referring to the tone, like more mids/highs? Or rhythmic figures?

I like that idea- I think I want the solo guitar to (1: NOT suck and) sit a little further in the mix from the start.
