What do you use sound forge for that sonar can't do or is easier to do in Sound Forge?
I know cakewalk sonar can do most of the things, but what are the things that sonar can't do that sound forge can or you would rather use soundforge instead of sonar for a specific process?

My puter is dual boot & I use it on my non DAW OS & laptop to upload samples, clips to the internet. I've had it for so long & it just works fine, no problems. Does batch processing & I'll also use it for editing if needed. I also use Reaper, Foobar for mp3's/ lame encoding on my non DAW drive. They're both small files & can be reinstalled very easily if needed. Sonar doesn't play well with my other non music software (or vice versa.)

Sound Forge is a stereo edting program. Sonar is a midi/audio recorder. They have overlaps, and except for track count you can do much on both. I won't go over Sonar stregnths, no doubt you know them. Sound forge can record, but mostly I import sounds. It is great for doing mastering - top and tail the file, doing changes to it (fx, etc.) while leaving the orginal mix untouched, converting it to CD or MP3 (it doesn't cost extra like SONAR or are you using a pirated version - hm), and adding mp3/preference notes to the file. If you have ever wondered which mix had that effect, adding notes to the CD file will let you straighten things out if you are dilligent. It is also great for working on samples or drops. It has a pencil tool. It ... well, it is a professional editor and to do complete work it really, really helps to have it. It certainly can save a lot of time. @

Sample and loop editing primarily. Converting files. Sound design. Offline analysis. Though most of that stuff can be done non-destructively and via plug-ins in Sonar, having a dedicated audio editor just make all those tasks quicker/easier, as it is designed from the ground up to do those things. That is to say, everything in the menu and every functions are pertinent to the task at end, whereas in Sonar, for a task that requires 3 operations you may have to jump through a few hoops. Little simple things like adding backward reverb - I've sometimes done it in Sonar, but overall, I feel the whole application gets in the way more than it facilitates this sort of operation. As discussed in a different thread, Cakewalk had an Audio view in their products prior to Sonar. Though it was no match for a dedicated audio editor, I used to use it quite a bit and always wished they would have brought it back. Nevertheless, there'll always be room for a dedicated app. I also work w/ Logic, which has an audio editor, and I'm still planning on buying Peak. I just like having a dedicated tool.

For converting between file formats you hardly need something as expensive as SoundForge. The free Audacity can convert WAV to MP3. I use a program called Ease Audio (costing around $25) that can convert between all audio formats.

I was actually referring to sample rate conversion, but, yes, of course, there are alternatives, even free ones. Though even Sound Forge comes in many flavors - SF Audio Studio sells for $29 on Amazon, I think. Also for operations like cleaning up audio files and noise reduction, having a dedicated editor just makes sense - particularly when you can find one that works for you for free or just a few $.

It was cheap too when I got my first copy years ago. I updated it once a few years back & it included a free copy of Izotope Ozone 4 so it's paid for itself.

Well, as we disussed in another thread, Sonar can't edit transient peaks and it doesn't export to Dolby AC3(yes I know about AC3 encoders but that's extra cost and SF 10 already takes care of that). If you think of all the synths and vintage, modeled, hardcoded plugs Cake keeps throwing in, why can't they add some serious editing tools instead? That's more desirable and useful to me than 40 soft synths and ProChannels. SF 10 is fairly expensive but it's also loaded... and not just for audio editing either. I could see getting a lot of mileage out of it and it is highly desirable to me at the moment... enough so that I'm not going to bother upgrading to the current version of Wavelab.

I mix the song in SONAR and keep the 24 bit stereo mixdown with the file. I then use a copy of the file to master in Sound Forge. The mix usually goes in/out through some nice hardware comp/limiters and my TC Konneck hardware. The mastering in SF is just polishing, converting, trimming. @

I've used the pencil to repair overs. It works - as long as the over isn't too long. But raw waveforms - no. I haven't done it. But SF also has a utility built in that does sine and square (I believe) waveforms and FM synthesis. I haven't mucked around w/ them much, but it is interesting it includes that functions. @

I think this was around 2007, originally Ozone 3, when 4 was released Izotope emailed me the registration numbers. I have v3 & 4 reg numbers listed in an Ozone account, both are for the full versions.

I'm gonna take a wild guess though and assume the pencil tool is only available in the full, pro version? I've used the pencil tool in Protools for drawing out pops and it worked like a charm. I still can't believe Cake actually had this at one point and abandoned it.... that makes no sense to me at all.

Zuma, I don't know if it is included in the cheaper version since I don't have it. Sony has a pretty extensive description if you check their website, but I would make a call if that is the one thing you have to have. @

OK. thank you gentlemen. I was actually on the Sony site yesterday but just saw an overview of the tools and it made no mention of the pencil tool... didn't think to look in the manual though. I placed an email to Sweetwater though just to make sure. Thanks AT and Rain.
