I'm not sure, but I think it's a vegtable. I think it's a type of bean. A Blimey Bean, to be exact.  I don't really know for sure, because I've made it my lifelong practice to avoid having anything to do with such vile beasts.

I believe it's origins come from 'God blind me.' contracted then to Gaw Blimey then further to just Blimey. It's use reflects that too, literally meaning I can't believe what I'm seeing. Crikey likewise deriving from 'Christ strike me'. Again an exclamation of disbelief. They come from a time when many common folk were pious and God-fearing.

Still more:
"zounds" = God's wounds (I think it means the spear stabs)
"gadzooks" = God's hooks (hands, or nails at crucifixion, depending on whom you ask)
AFAIK there is no contracted or elided form for "Lord love a duck," which is just as well really.
