12 episodes altogether over 2 series. Extremely funny. They don't write comedy like that any more.

I don't know so much.

Maybe with the exclusion of A Fish Called Wanda and Clockwise, he hasn't really done, or been in, anything funny since Fawlty Towers.

He's been involved in a couple of (rather frankly - very embarrassing) ad campaigns over here for Sainsburys and the AA (Automobile Association).

but that wasn't the discussion sir steve of strummerton.
May I suggest that you start a thread entitled 'I don't like John Cleese' and stop with the Basil hating :)

Yeah I know what you mean mate, I just think it's best left where it was as the classic it is.

And I do lurve me a bit of John Cleese - I have every episode of both FT and Monty Python (box-set of TV episodes and all the films) on DVD.

I was only kidding - I also know what you mean - A Fish Called Wanda was and still is excellent and for once he was pretty subdued in that.
He lost his edge for me when he came to the US - bit parts in crappy movies (the voice of the ape in George of the Jungle, Q in Bond).

If I remember correctly, the problem was writing the shows.  I saw an interview where John said there was two or three years in between those two seasons because they took that long to write them properly.

Yes.  I wish there were more of them.

TBH I don't think you could. It was brilliant , but I don't think it would work now, especially by the time the pc brigade had run the rule over it. Can you imagine what it would be like now that hitting a Spanish waiter with a spoon would be classed as racial stereotype bullying, not to mention employee harrassment and cruelty to spoons ? And as for shouting at deaf people ..........;)

The good news for you when you come back is that it's almost as hard to avoid on TV as Only Fools and Horses these days.

Clearing out a house, I once found an old audio book of two episodes (the deaf woman one was one of them) and it was amazing how funny it was even without the benefit of seeing it, though I guess that could possibly be because the images are all kind of ingrained in the memory now.

Cries of "Basil!" tend to produce loud laughter from me, which results in receiving a glare from my wife, who sounds nothing at all like Sybil.  No.

I do get whacked with a spoon occasionally, however.  In retrospect, it seems justified.

I'm not sure why, but I think they ran out of ideas and possibilities. But you gotta remember that John, his wife Connie Booth, and Prunella Scales, probably had other commitments or this threesome simply ran its course!

I would rather have The Black Adder ... and maybe a movie or two instead of that Mr. Bean BS! And for "extras" to be cast, I want Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Robert DeNiro, Madonna, and a few other notorious names ... so he can really have fun nailing them to the wall.

And this time Baldric gets a girl-friend ... hahaha ... much to his consternation!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Ha ha, class film ! I remember first watching this at school in Religious Education lessons ! We wangled it because the teacher said we could pick our own subject for a religious debate, so we chose..."Life of Brian, is it blaspehemous?. Discuss"  Naturally it was necessary for everybody to be familliar with the film in order to be able to take part.

BTW may I just say  ..... your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries !

Now you're talking Pedro.

One of my favourite passages:

Melchett: Aah, are you looking forward to the big push?

Baldrick: No sir, I'm absolutely terrified.

Melchett: The healthy humour of the honest Tommy. Hahaaa, don't worry my boy, if you should falter, remember that Captain Darling and I are behind you.

Blackadder: About thirty-five miles behind you.
