What iOS app are you using to control SONAR?

I used to use V-Control Pro with an iPad but I'm not happy with the paid version.  They promised a SONAR template for iPhone but never produced one, to my knowledge.  It is cumbersome to install, requires iLok, is not reliable, and is overpriced.

I have experimented with DAW Remote HD, but it hasn't been supported in years.  It will not support iOS 11 so I have to keep it on a very old iPad and cannot use my newer one.

All I want is transport control including one button for back to Home, track selection, and track mute/solo/arm for recording.  I like to play along with SONAR and occasionally record a track, and the room in which I do this is a different room from the computer.

Do you have any suggestions?

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

I tried a bunch of them.  I ended up using the free Splashtop, which is a remote desktop program that works via WiFi.  It basically makes your remote device into your DAW's screen, so you can do anything and everything you can do on your normal DAW's screen.  On portable devices, obviously the screen is very small, but you can zoom in on any portion of the screen you need to, for instance a portion of the control bar, or a portion of the track view for the purposes you mention.

I've never had an issue recording that way (using iPad/Splashtop wirelessly connected to DAW).  Works great.

I am still able to use DAW Remote HD on an iPad2, with less upgrade anxiety (at least from the app/Apple end)  -
(older iPad is also still useful for storing midi sysex patches, manuals, many other uses).
Another option might be an older Tranzport unit, as far as I know the drivers still work on Windows 10, and they seem to be available on eBay from time to time.

Thank you both.  It's been a long time since I looked at Splashtop; will look again.

Steve, yes, I have an iPad2 and it is frozen as far as updates, so I'm still OK using DAW Remote HD.  But the way the Apple store works, insisting vendors keep up, makes me wonder how much longer it will work when this vendor does no support.

Any other suggestions out there, please?

I use TouchOSC, but on my iPhone. I would think it would translate to an iPad. This is with azslow’s
azcontroller. It can be very simple or much more comprehensive. I use a simple setup that allows choosing a track, MSR buttons and most important ‘undo. ‘

In my researching for Splashtop I also found VNC Viewer, which also has very good reviews. Has anyone tried that one?
It's free, allows access from anywhere in the world, but forces you to sign up with their server.

I had not used Splashtop since 2012.  I reinstalled it and it works fine.  The iPad screen does have to be zoomed somewhat, but it does what I need.  Thank you, Pete.

Splashtop Personal - WOW!  Holy Cow!  It works!
I just bought the iOS app ($9.99) and installed it on my iPad2
and installed the other part on the studio computer.
It all went without a hitch.

So now I have all of Sonar's program on my iPad.
Where have I been?  This is incredible!

I'm glad you guys find Splashtop useful!

I don't have an acoustically good recording space, so I do critical recordings in a walk-in closet full of clothes (the quietest "room" in the house), which is very dry and allows me to avoid the not-the-greatest acoustics in my studio. Obviously I can't bring the DAW (laptop) into those close quarters due to fan noise. So the iPad with Splashtop works perfectly. Plus for some things (like sampling), it allows me to see the realtime peak and short term signal level graphs that are on my DAW's screen (MMultiAnalyzer). Quite handy when recording velocity layers. You can't do that with any of the remote control apps.

I just installed and configured EyoControl. Even though the software states it supports up to iOS 7 it’s working great on my iPad which is at iOS 11.3.1. I’m primarily just interested in transport, panning, record, solo, mute and fader control. All of those work great for me via EyoControl.

I still use AC-7 Core HD. Has a Sonar mode that is still compatible with CbB and then I simply use RTMP midi to set up the connection from Ipad to LAN and into the PC. Once in sonar it shows up as a Mackie Compatible controller and had all the Pans, Fader, Meter, Transport / Jog Shuttle that I need. Works a treat and has done so for many years.

Another option is DAW Remote HD which works in a similar fashion but also allows you to build custom panels.

I gave several apps a go and it was all just too difficult and unreliable. I have two identical wireless keyboards and one lives in the recording booth. I was thinking of putting an extra screen in there too, but so far, it just hasn't been necessary. I usually loop record if it's just me in there and the extra keyboard works a treat !!

Same here.  I've tried a bunch of them, and DAW Remote HD still works the best.  I still have an iPad 2 that I keep in the studio for that and other music-related tasks.  It works just fine.

In the future, I'm hoping Bandlab will consider developing an iOS native control app for Cakewalk.  Both StudioOne and Cubase have great control apps, and these days that's more and more of a selling point.  Third party solutions work "okay" but don't hold a candle to dedicated control apps.

checked out Splashtop. Looked great! But, from what I’ve read on the site, there’s no support for key combinations? ie: you can’t CTRL-Z to undo, say a botched start to a recording take on the tablet that’s remotely controlling Sonar across the room on a PC. Is that right? I’m a big CTRL-Z (undo, try again guy!) when at an instrument away from the desktop. Am I missing something? Thanks.

checked out Splashtop. Thanks.

Get Frontier Tranzport, it's around $50 on ebay. It's discontinued, but still 100% works with Win10. It has special driver & firmware tailored for Sonar (works with CbB too). You can customized combination keys to do almost whatever you like. Believe me, its amazing!

I disable the NIC in my PC when I run Sonar.  I've had clicks and dropouts with the NIC connected.  Thus using a wi-fi connected controller is out for me.  However, I have a Frontier Tranzport that I still use, so I have a wireless controller if needed.  I don't use the Tranzport as much as I used to as it interferes with my Behringer X-Touch wired control surface in Sonar only (works OK in other DAWS).  Something in the Win 10 Fall Creator's Upgrade (Fall 2017) caused the Sonar problem.  Before that the Tranzport and X-Touch co-existed without problems in Sonar.  Our forum control surface guru, Azslow, confirmed its the way Sonar handles the devices.

One useful and often overlooked iOS tool for remote control of PCs is Microsoft Remote Desktop.

It’s not a DAW controller but duplicates the Windows screen on the iPad (or another PC, or a Mac). Handy for all sorts of things.

Maybe Bandlab could even code a CbB remote control app like Apple’s Logic Remote or the Studio 1 equivalent? Apps dedicated to specific DAWs seem to work much better than “general DAW control” ones. Especially as Sonar (as was) was never the easiest thing to get remote control of - ACT was overdue for a total overhaul/replacement years ago.

Having done a bunch of research it looks like updates to remote control software has stopped several years ago. At least it has stopped for iOS. I guess there’s not a big enough demand. If anyone knows of any currently updated apps I would be surprised and interested.
