Up till now, I've been content to just try and make myself happy. Durn it, now you've got me wondering what, if anything, is the point.

I'll get back to you after I've had a few weeks under a coconut tree to ponder the question.

Just to try and get as near as I can to the music I imagine/hear in my head. So far I'm still falling short, but that's OK, I think that's maybe the point of it.

I am with James on this one, always had a passion for music, always wanted to make music.

Re: What, if any, is the goal of your music production? 2014/02/03 15:03:59 (permalink)
With the latest song I wrote/recorded/mixed, I had a single goal in mind: to jumpstart the writing of a screenplay that had stalled. Let me explain...

Besides being a musician, I'm also an actor (and a writer, a designer, yadda-yadda-yadda, ad infinitum). Mainly, though--these days--I'm an actor. I played a rather large role in a feature film a couple of years ago and the guy who wrote and directed it (Karim) made another film last year, a short, and he cast me in that, too. The short film was entered into a contest hosted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and won its region. It didn't win at the national level, but came in either second or third (I don't remember which for sure, but I think it was second).

Anyway, my friend, Karim, decided to expand the short into a feature and, of course, he is planning to once again cast me. Over the summer, however, the writing stalled and he put it aside and started working on something else. At about the same time, I was writing a ditty to use as background music for a demo reel. One day my wife played a song by a French band; it was about how crazy it can be to fall in love and I was inspired.

So, I wrote "How Do You Know (When You're Falling in Love)?" based on the tune I was using for the ditty. And then I heard about the stalled script and realized just how well the song fit the movie and decided to record it, give it as "full" a treatment as I could and send it to Karim as inspiration to get the scriptwriting unstalled.

And it worked. Karim is now back it, doing a page-one rewrite. This is the fifth draft and it looks like it's going to be THE one.

Re: What, if any, is the goal of your music production? 2014/02/03 16:42:59 (permalink)
Well here's my take on this. When I was a kid in school I had bands, and started playing clubs at age 15. I have a few friends who have made a living on the road with some pretty big acts. To be honest, it has never been my goal to be a star or even make a living with music. I remember my biggest dream was to have my own studio at home were I could write and record what I wanted when I wanted. That dream has come true for me thanks to technology. When I was growing up in the 80's a nice studio would have cost $50,000 easy. Now days I'm very content with life. I would like to try and get some songs in music libraries, but that's as far as my dreams go. I have no interest in pleasing anyone but myself, and you just can't get far with that way of thinking. I believe music is an art...it's a passion. It's something I feel compelled to do. Performing is a completely different thing. I have never wanted or cared to be an entertainer. The bug does return from time to time to play live, but it's a totally selfish thing. I told a friend once...We play live for money, for fun or for ego, and sometimes all three at once. Whatever it is, it has to be fun or I'm not going to hang around long. Writing and recording is always a satisfying experience. I'm far from being a pro and there are many here who are far more talented engineers than I, but there is something about the trying that has me hooked.

To record songs I have written and a few covers. I have always found it to be really hard. Perhaps it is an "old dog/new tricks" thing... I don't know. These days everything seems to be a major undertaking. I live one day at a time.
Thank you for asking. You are certainly one of the good guys in life.

I'm always curious as to what aspirations folks have for their "musical creations". And by that I mean cold hard light of day, honest appraisals. If such things exist. We all spend a good deal of time both learning the craft of recording and production as well as how to either play or score in the required instruments for our magnum opuses. To what end??

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

Don't forget to carry off all their "loot"!!

What are my goals ? That's a tough question. Years ago, it was to get the girls...then it was to get rich....now in my old age I can say I've achieved both, but am finding myself without both, and only concerned about my health. You can get the women, but then they only want money....so why bother....now I suppose my only goal is to be prepared and set up to record that perfect piece of music when the inspiration hits...only problem is that the inspiration doesn't hit anymore....I guess I'll never be a Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars....it's getting way too late for that. Instead of being a rock star, I'm becoming an old computer geek. blahhhh

I touched on this in my single release thread but short term... make a bit of money to supplement my income. Long term... leave something behind after I'm dead. It would be extremely irresponsible for me to breed for many reasons but the biggest one is my "issues" are genetic so there's a good chance any kids I had would be f*cked up too. This may sound egotistical but I think my playing style and musical ideas really could be influential on a larger scale if it got out there. I've already influenced some microcosms around me and seen young dudes/chicks swiping techniques and riffage from me. If I see young spazzes adjusting their sh*t even slightly based on how I do things I could die knowing it was all worth it.

Everything I've posted here on the forum is boring as a liverspot covered in yawns as far as I'm concerned.

This pretty much sums me up to a tee, Clint; I couldn't have said this much better.  From the day I picked up my first electric guitar, I wasn't really wanting to be a star, I only wanted to write, record and go into the studio.  It just wasn't at all possible in the 80's unless you had a following and were in a descent band.

Re: What, if any, are the goals of your music production? 2014/02/04 07:29:59 (permalink)
If "music production goals" includes all aspects from the day I started playing then I would have to list many, many goals that I had in a 50 yr span.
I limited my previous post to goals I hoped could be achieved and why by using a DAW.

My main goal since the first time I picked up a guitar to produce music was to learn how to play it...and still. The reason is simple; I enjoy playing one. Nothing else such as recording or stardom has ever been a priority.
Many, many experiences such as recording studios, bands and gigging were just "take 'em or leave 'em" to me. As long as they were fun I was good to go until the day I decided I was much more content with just a guitar. Thirty yrs plus of trying to please others was enough so back to the main reason and main goal I had set at an early age.

Re: What, if any, are the goals of your music production? 2014/02/04 08:00:29 (permalink)
I echo many of the sentiments already stated.

I play and write music because I must. It is an intrinsic part of who I am. Whether other people like what I do or how I do it, matters not to me.

I totally enjoy my time with music. Whether it's creating and writing a brand new song or simply playing an older one and listening to music of others who are doing likewise.

I aspire to be the best I can through study, application, practice, and interfacing with others who share the same likes and pursuits in life..... this thing we call MUSIC.

As with most musicians, I would do this totally for free, regardless. I have played more than my share of "free gigs" paying the costs to get there out of my pocket. Kind of a labor of love sort of thing.  The old adage of who would take $5000 worth of gear, load it into a $20,000 van to drive 100 miles to play for $20? A musician of course.

So that same basic principle now applies to the music I do today. I have a relatively decent home studio where I spend inordinate amounts of time (according to my wife) to produce the best sounding possible music I can, for a very small handful of people to ever hear...... which I then load on my MP3 player, so I can listen to what I consider to be good music as I go through my daily activities.

In recent years, several other people have begun to agree with me that there might be something to some of this music I have written and produced through the years. Several music publishers with good track records and accolades on their walls have signed a number of my songs and musical cues for use in commercial endeavors. At the current time, I'm still waiting for the proverbial ship to come in laden with gold and spices and other sorts of goodies....until that happens, I keep working on perfecting the craft of music production and song writing and searching for the next golden opening line for the next song.

Aren't we reading it right now, Mosh?? ;-)

Nope. Not even close. You get a lot of snipets of what I'm about, and folks kinda think they know me, but in the end, it doesn't matter to me if they do or they don't.

It's all become ... what have you done for me lately, and most of these folks have no idea what the art and the words mean, and specially when there was a time, when your only hope and prayer, were those words.

Trust me, I'm not waiting for Godot, anymore than I am Craig, or Bapu, to wake up from their posting slumbers!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
