What is TDM and Native?

Excuse my ignorance. I did a google search for this and didn't find an answer to the question. I noticed that certain software plugs have two versions. Thanks.

TDM is for Pro-Tools systems. Native just means it will run entirely on software provided your system supports the plugin type ( DX, VST, AU, etc... )

...so Sonar supports Native plugins that use the DX or VST protocol.

    Clydewinder,
Thanks for clearing that up! I was checking out some plugs online, and saw that Waves had 2 versions. How come the price is double for the TDM stuff? Just curious.

My understanding of the higher price is that the TDM ones are designed in the 'split format' scheme, where the algorithms load onto the DSP board and the interface runs on the computer, though I may be wrong about that. So they are much more targeted towards a pro market, which is smaller and more specialized and hence always a higher price to make it worth the effort.

Thanks for the responses. Now I know!! I got nervous when I saw how much more "they" wanted for TDM software and was hoping that I didn't fall into that catagory.

TDM: Does all the processing on external units. helps a ton if your doing lots of audio plugins.

those 4 units at the bottom are what does the processing in TDM, if you want to think of it this way, its external RAM, and does I/O as well (i believe)

Native: All plug-in processing is done on the computer processor, which works, but when you get lots of plugins going it can slow your system down.

i believe this is mostly a Pro Tools thing, if im not mistaken.
