What is that percussion (African?/Not the cowbell) used in Santana's "Evil Ways"?

I see it used in lot of old Santana song.. I wish I could explain more! Any idea? Its a percussive scratching noise..
If you really want to help me out, then tell me the names of all non-drums percussion Santana used in the 70s, then I can sample those sounds and figure out what I am looking for... thanks in advance.

These two should have been available in with Addictive drums Session Percussion, at lease as Kit pieces, instead of another pandiero. 2-3 shakers should have just been in the with the main ad pak as not substantial enough to be a kit pieces (unless 3 shakers made one kit piece)
