What is that "scooped" sound?

I gotta dumb question and not sure where to ask it but this forum, but what, exactly, is that "scooped" sound I keep seeing referenced?

I even just saw something saying Strats with rosewood fretboards have a more "scooped" sound than maple.

To me, that means scooped mids(EQ).

My understanding is "scooped" refers to less frequency in the midrange.
I could guess the term derived from the "smile" of a graphic eq. showing the mids "scooped" down and mayby the lows and highs even boosted.

Choices of woods and pickups can surely achieve this sound.

Oookay, so just turn down the "Mid".
Cool, so I can keep the maple fretboard.
    Cheers.

I had a strat in a former life. I put a humbucker in the bridge for some reason.
That'll change the "scoop" I imagine. Or maybe it made it scoop more. I don't remember, but it was a chunk of tone for sure.

What if it scooped the other way? From low to mid and back to low again? Making a frown opposed to a smiley? isn't that still scooped sound?

That would be more like a "lo-fi" or "AM radio" sound.

I wouldn't think so following the same logic as the originator of the "scoop".
As scoop would be taking away.

Not sure if there is more slang terms but "boosting mids" is the only term I know for that.

Boosting the mids is not unusual for a guitarist. One can also purchase pre-wired pickups for Strats that have the Clapton or Gilmour set-ups for this. (best I recall).

Glad Cryo showed up. Visual aid is great. That's teamwork. :)

Oh, thanks Spacey. Your right, I'm thinking "boosting mids" totally. Which an engineer or two has done to my sound before, for guitar. So scoop is considered scooping away. But it make me thing of the frozen custard place down the street. Man, that stuff is way better than ice cream.

Yeah, true.  How about the "bleeding eardrums" sound?

The scooped sound does indeed refer to the lack of mids in positions 2 and 4 on a 5 position switch, when the neck/mid or mid/bridge combination is used. A humbucker does not eliminate it. Someone makes a jack designed to eliminate that scooped tone, but I love it and use it often
