What is the best 60 seconds of music you can make with your current software?
I have 0.01% musical talent, skill or understanding (a marked improvement over my previous state of 0%), but I love hearing what you guys can do. After reading posts about plugin addictions, sales and upcoming K11, it struck me to ask what is the actual improvement in your music making if you acquire all these things? So here's the challenge. Make the best 60 seconds of music you can make using what you own right now. Then after you acquire your new stuff over the Black Friday / Christmas holidays come back and remake your 60 seconds. Has it improved and by how much?

No you misunderstand, we are plugin collectors. Were like those who collect classic cars and antique's of sorts. We don't even need a plugin to make 60 seconds of good music but it's so much fun filling up the FX bin with cool looking plugins that all do pretty much the same thing. Just ask the plugin expert Bapu. He'll set you straight.

For me it's all about ease of use, i.e., key-switching, RR, velocity, ADSR, etc. are not the same for virtual instruments. The best ones let the user to just load and play, whereas simpler instruments may require countless tweaking. The same is true with FX.

At this point most new instrument acquisitions represent a small, incremental addition to an already-large toolkit. I might sit on a Kontakt library for months before finding a place for it, and even then it might make only a minor contribution. There are exceptions, of course. Talking about those instruments that fill a major gap in your repertoire or make difficult parts easier, and thus alter the way you do things. For example, Kirk Hunter Concert Strings was my first serious string library. It changed the way I approach orchestration, made me more attentive to detail, and spurred me to tackle more ambitious string arrangements.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

I'm gonna try something with Albion One. Just got it in. I'm thinking it will be a nice in-between for Garritan's Instant Orchestra and GPO5 on one hand and EW Hollywood Orchestra on the other.

For me it's about inspiration. Only so many times I can start with a blank slate and try getting a track started with the same piano sound. Even if a new one is only slightly different (and even if I could have made the difference myself by tweaking a few knobs), having those new presets helps me get started.

I'm not sure if this was to be humorous but it really hit home. Some of my most productive stuff was using a Voyetra sound card, Yamaha XG50 midi player and a Casio keyboard before USB midi. I started on Cakwalk Music Creator, then I move on to Sonar 2 XL, Gigastudio 2.5. After that so many VSTs, DAWs,pro audio cards, then it went downhill.

When I'm stuck I mess around with loops-them I'm still stuck. I use notepad to write down chord progression, products to combine. The problem with chord is I forget to write the voicing which can make a difference- I'm still stuck. Then I go to these forums to offer my opinions I'm still stuck. I gotta lotta cool stuff though - I'm still stuck.

Did someone say free? I dunno if it is right but someone said when you get stuck look at the chords that work well together and in what order chart and create 4 / 8 / 16 measures of chords and write a melody over the top. Oh and i love free.
