What is the point of adding the Shuttle Pro2 as a controller in Sonar?

So I recently purchased a Contour Shuttle Pro 2 controller.  In Sonar Plat, there is an option to add this device as a controller under Edit|Preferences|Control Surfaces.  Doing this seems to have absolutely no effect whatsoever.  In the Contour applet itself, you can point one of the old Sonar configs to the Sonar Plat executable and most things work fine and if you don't like how it's set up, you can tweak button assignments.

What I totally do not understand is why it can be added as a controller in Sonar itself, when doing so seems to do nothing at all.  The only option seems to be to use the generic keyboard mapping, which doesn't make use of Sonar's controller configuration.  The down side of this is that if Sonar is not the app in focus, the Shuttle Pro2 doesn't talk to Sonar.  What am I missing?

BTW, I have the very latest Shuttle software installed on my Windows 8.1 DAW (version 2.12.1).

EDIT: Hmm, looks like THIS might be the problem.  I will test in X3 to see if the problem is exclusive to Platinum.  Bummer if this is the case :(
