It's all explained in the webinar.  Basically it's a pro channel module that emulates the subtle sound of a real console.

Basically, a soft console emulater tries to model all the intricacies of a analog hardware console.  This is a lot of math if you look at a signal chain of a large console, and, of course, doesn't take into account the ageing of all the components and how they change over time - or just the ageing of the one they are modeling.

Different companies do a better or worse job depending upon how much they want to invest in such modeling - and how good they are.

    A couple of points:

A 'real" analog console's componets react differently depending upon how hard any component is driven.  Since there are hundreds in a single channel/bus , it sounds like a tedious job indeed.  I wouldn't want to do it, but nobody would hire me since I'm challenged by bank statements.  I suppose most console emulators short cut the process, which hardware can't do.

Software keeps getting better, and as one continues to model it should be expected that more measurements would make the processes closer.  Console emulation is in its infancy - it should get better.

As most of the digital/analog arguements end - analog has the advantage, but most of us don't the money or the room for our very own vintage neve or new $250,000 ssl in our bedrooms.  If you want the real thing most likely you have to go to a high-end studio.

Digital is affordable, getting better and good enough in many instances, and, most importantly for the professional, repeatable.

I look forward to seeing just how well Cake does the job.
