I work for "a VERY large government contractor" - the company has over 125k employees.  the plant where I work alone has 13k.

Wait a minute...  If your plant has 13,000 employees, why do you have to work alone?

Oh, nevermind.  It's a government contractor.  The other 12,999 are probably all management.

After hearing him sing lately I want less Paul too.

In all fairness he's not quite as bad off as Stephen Stills.

Come to think of it there are frogs that sing better than I do

Id much rather work for Gibson than for Fender... but I cannot get into why because it would be a violation of the TOS.

Also, there are more differences between the LP Standard (for example) and a guitar like the R-8 or R-9 (Historic RIs) the biggest and most importat difference being the depth of the neck pocket. I all production models the neck pocket is not as deep. In the Historics such as the R-8 the neck pocket extends to the neck pickup, it makes a difference in tone.... pickups, knobs, and bindings all aside, this one difference is big, IMO.

Let's see, a "very large" government contractor in Texas...OK, so do you know anything about the billions Halliburton "lost"? If so, I'll keep quiet if you let me in on it.

LOL - nope, wrong contractor!  (tho, what else would you expect me to say? )  I work for the LARGEST US govt contractor.  the headquarters of the company I work for is not in Texas, it's in Maryland.

Just to add to it. If you would have looked up Fender Musical Instruments, it was only a bit better than Gibson, something like 29% or so who like the company.

But I'm guessing, given that Henry's buying companies, that Gibson isn't hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

And it isn't owned by Weston Presidio.
http://finance.fortune.cn...fender-pulled-its-ipo/ :

Weston Presidio paid $57.8 million for its stake in Fender back in December 2001. Fender used the money from the sale to help pay the shareholders who had orchestrated Fender's buyout from CBS in 1985. In 2005, Weston Presidio recapitalized the company thanks to a $320 million debt-financing package from Goldman Sachs (GS). Under terms of the deal, Fender had to pay Weston Presidio (along with other shareholders and employees) a total of $215 million in dividends and bonuses.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Weston Presidio is a good example why companies go under during a market downturn. That deal is an example similar to using a credit card to get cash. The company gains $100 million in capital to work with, yet gets stuck with $300 million in debt - that $200 million debt drain with no capital resources to help make it up. It's no wonder companies in the audio business have changed owners five or more times.

So many businesses feel it better to debt finance operations, I mean hey, the 'gubmint' practically gives it away to Wall Street - far cheaper than tendering new shares...

Just for fun I followed you suggestion and went and looked at the Fender info.

The Fender rating isn't something like 29% who like the company. There is a 2.9 out of 5 stars rating on a combination of 5 factors. (compared to 1.8 out of 5 stars for Gibson)

The approval of the Fender CEO is listed as 38% compared to 14% at Gibson.

43% of the Fender people wold recommend the place to a friend compared to 13% at Gibson.

Best regards,
Mike

Re: What it's like to work for Gibson 2013/10/12 16:11:41 (permalink)
Hi,

I work for a large corporation, and the one thing that is prevalent, and sometimes rather visible, is that some folks will say ok inside the doors, and outside say something else.

Count me out!

I'm on my 10th year here, and I am fairly happy with things, and a few benefits, and me trashing it is stupid and counter productive. ESPECIALLY in this day and age, when so many of us are losing benefits, and jobs, and not having a good time enjoying life because of it.

There is always something or other that is not perfect, but name me one or two at home, that are the same thing! Or at school!

When it comes to something like GIBSON, their direction and work is very important and the difference between top and bottom is probably very noticeable ... but it is likely to be the reason why the instrument stands out ... and sometimes the folks involved are not helping people understand that, but then, is there anything in the music world that is not so darn transient and sad as it is?

Craftsmanship, is not something that you can teach. Craftsmanship is a personalized taste and touch that some have, and others don't. And you have to protect that. But it doesn't give you the license to be a jerk or stupid, though, and this is the part that is difficult to articulate and work with. In my old days in restaurants, I had bosses and superiors that were liars, cheaters, child molesters and rapists ... but they never got caught ... and it seemed like no one gave a damn, either, because in those days it was OK to pick up the waitress and such, and even give her a part time job for some favors! Still is in California! ... tried any music or film service/work lately?

All in all, the way I look at it, is that if you are not happy, you owe it to yourself to make the change ... and not get embittered by it. I don't think I will ever get upset about my benefits, unless I no longer have any, and I appreciate them every day and hour of the week that I am still working here.

And if that is not good enough? ... no matter. I can look in the mirror and say ... I tried my best and did not just come in, punch the clock and then punched out. I put in my effort and care!

In the end, I learned a long time ago while waiting on tables the difference between a nickel and a dollar tip. After that, you are not always going to worry about too many things and concentrate on the customer. The rest is easy!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

I have several Tuis perched in the natives in my backyard. Also some magpies which squawk and bully other birds. And several Pukaka too- which look like the near extinct (or possibly already extinct Takahe) but are actually somewhat pests- but you can't shoot them becuaser they are a native bird and if you do Hatu Patu will steal your spirit.

The Tuis sound wonderful but they don't say much.

crap, wrong thread. Was meant to be in the bird one.
