Alright jbow,

first let me quote you

jbow
Anything?
Things that matter make me think.
Things that shouldn't matter make me think.
Failures make me think.
My "to do" list makes me think.
Maintenance make me not want to think, then it make me wish I did.
Music makes me think.
Others opinions make me think.
Books make me think.
Dreams make me think.
Eschatology makes me think.

Good start, this shows that you have a level of awareness and complexity to your thought process

first my original comment ,
The Mind is only part of the puzzle ..
What I find most important is what sparks the mind and ignites Creativity .

On any given day my mind thinks hundreds of thousands of thoughts .
Many of the thoughts I may be thinking about may set into motion an emotional response  ..
It does not matter if the thoughts were on the surface where I can see them , or below the surface in the subconscious realm  ...
It happens to be a scientific fact that on a physiological neurological level human beings process what they think and feel as being real and happening in the moment even if all the evidence to the contrary is present .

The scientific evidence is certainly out there.

Science has taken Olympic Athletes , hooked them up to machines where they monitored every aspect of their mental , physiological and neurological activity's and found when an Athlete visualized a performance it created a corresponding physical reaction in all the Athletes muscles ...they were ignited .

To the mind , Time , Space and many of the physical attributes we as humans have to suffer from simply do not exist ...

In the Realm of The Mind and my Imagination , not only can I fly , I can Travel Time and set things Right and find closure in the situations that took place in my life that I was not fully equipped to understand during the times they may have happened .

One Key attribute of the Mind serves a very similar function to the browser in SONAR ...

To get where I'm going with this lets pretend to suspend disbelief for a moment ....

Lets say everything I ever was and always hoped to be already existed as a folder in my SONAR/Life  application .
How would I access that ? How can I change the tune of what I am experiencing in my Life ?
Using my Mind much like I would use the Media browser in SONAR I can take full control of of being able to pick and choose correctly what thoughts and feelings I want to incorporate as my new thoughts , feelings and song that is playing in my life .
In this respect The Mind is only part of the puzzle  because it takes a tremendous amount of personal responsibility to accept and harness that aspect of the true power of the Mind
To The Mind regarding the level of Pure Potentiality limited or unlimited empowerment...it does not matter.

My basic point is ,
In my life it is not important for me to fully understand the full depth and complexity of the inner workings of my Mind ..
I can use my mind for the same old same old or  I can use it as a tool to build a bridge over the divide to the very creative elements of what I would like to incorporate in each enfolding new moment as it unfolds ...
With that chosen application of the mind as an ideal ( for me ), the mind has the capacity to bring forth new thoughts , feelings , and emotions ...
My hope is to take more control of my mind and use it to ignite Creativity

all the best ,

Kenny

Oh Yeah , Life is Good .

I think you're in danger of becoming a Problem Thinker, jbow.

Oh, it starts out innocently enough, thinking recreationally as a teen. But before you know it, you can't enjoy any activity without thinking. You find yourself thinking alone, even first thing in the morning. Eventually friends shun you because of your excessive thinking. One day you wake up with the realization that you've hit bottom, totally disconnected from most of humanity and unable to function in a perplexing world in which driving cars in a circle is considered a sport, where Donald Trump is a serious political candidate, and you'd rather hang out in the Coffee House than watch pro wrestling.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Things that make me think...

Physicists, philosophers, storytellers, and dreamers
Young children who indulge in make believe
Imaginary friends, even when I don't want to play.
Anyone who looks into the deep places of the universe and asks, "What if...?"
Musicians who play with such feeling and intensity that the song transcends sound and touches the soul
Daydreams, dreams, nightmares and fantasies
Solitude
Silence
Time
Unreality
The blinding darkness of the subconscious
Profound Nonsense
The hill upon which I am the resident fool

Hi,

Anything that is "unknown" or "unknowable", has a tendency to force a re-evaluation inside.

This is one of the reasons why some pop music doesn't faze me ... it has nothing new in it, and sometimes just sounds the same. For me, it just about has to be totally different.

NP: Wally - To The Urban Man

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Re: What makes you think? 2016/01/02 11:49:10 (permalink)
This is a great question and immensely provocative.  So what makes me think? Do I do it simply because I am conscious?  It appears so since consciousness and thought seem constantly connected.  But apparently I also think when I am unconscious as well such as when I dream.  So what makes me think?  I would say simply existing causes me to think.  So jbow, with your indulgence and permission I'm going to expand the question a little and ask "What makes me think deeply".   I humbly offer the following:

questions such as "What makes you think?"
mystery
teilhard de chardin
every philosopher that has ever lived
human behavior
The Enneads
faith
love
The One

Thank you for making me think!!

Images like the above.  When you first read that it's taken by the Hubble telescope aimed at a tiny point in the sky attempting to look as far away as possible, that's mind blowing enough.  But, when you realize that almost every bit of light that you see is actually an entire galaxy similar (or more likely larger than) our own Milky Way, well...
