What order are effects applied?
In the console view, audio tracks have an EQ bin and an Effects bin. 1) Is the EQ effect applied before any of the effects in the Effects bin? 2) When there are multiple effects in the effects bin, in what order are they applied? -- Larry

This is something i have often wondered about. I think there have been some threads on this topic before so have a look around. I think it is down to your own personal pref - often you can get some cool new effects just by jumbling your effects around in the FX bin. I usually EQ first, then compress, then add effects to the compressed signal. However sometimes i will EQ, add effects, and then compress. Depends. Maybe this is bad, but it all sounds good to me. I don't think SHS7 has the track inspector (a "console" type strip on the left side of the window which corresponds to the track or bus which is currently highlighted). that's how my per track EQ is displayed. I don't know how SHS7's is displayed. in mine, there's a little graph available of the EQ that you're setting. do you have a little graph? if so, right click on it and there should be options to use it PRE-FX or POST-FX. default is PRE. and to answer your 2nd question, all FX are applied top to bottom.

larrymcg 1) Is the EQ effect applied before any of the effects in the Effects bin? Hi there Larry Beag's got you covered here - HS7 does have the same options as SONAR. By default, the EQ in each console strip is turned OFF - when you switch it on, by default it is placed BEFORE the FX Bin. To insert the EQ AFTER the FX Bin, right click inside the EQ area and select Eq Post FX as shown here: HTH Steve

thanks steve - I was hoping you'd chime in on this. one other thing, now that steve has shown us what SHS7 has in a picture, and as he says it is the same as sonar, if you'll notice the SHOW EQ PROPERTIES selection there; that's the way I use it (if I use it) because it will pull up the sonitus graphic UI which is much easier for me to use than those small little graphics in the inspector.

Beag, that's exactly * what happens in HS7 too - the full Sonitus EQ UI opens. [pedantic] * Aside, of course, that opening it in SONAR means the UI has the solo ' S' option [/pedantic] He he - I must have read the manual and done the tutorials (no fun incorporated)

I just don't ever use the inline EQ myself. I played with it some when I first got S8, but then I thought - why use that one when I can just insert the Sonitus EQ into the FX bin? because I'm still opening the GUI anyway and if I place the sonitus EQ at the top of the FX bin that's the same as "pre" and if I place it at the bottom that's the same as "post" FX Bin. so, I guess it's just a workflow thing for some people but I personally don't see the point of it being "better" no sonitus punished....

OK! Thanks for the info! Now all I have to do is figure out what order I want them applied. But that's been addressed big time in other threads. All the different opinions makes me think there is not a "best" way. (Oh, oh -- that comment might generate some replies!) --Larry
