At one point it sound like they were laughing about the fact the ground (mounds)was shaking ... and then at the end they wished everybody could have come out and experienced it.

You could see that shot from Vegas. It wasn't so funny when the wind took it and it fell all over parts of Utah causing problems for years. Several more above ground tests were done until they finally learned the error of their ways. Maybe one day they'll figure out how to clean the mess up. They've got 10,000 years to work on it.

Never mind the detonation, the caption says there were 2 F-89's, whereas it looked to me rather like an F-89 and an RB-57 involved in the sortie instead. A little errant detail like that would have bugged me so much at the time it would have entirely ruined my experience and enjoyment of the blast. And who is it that would describe a missile strike required to hit an imaginary point somewhere in the entire sky as "...the perfect shot"?

In other news... they also used to let the kids in school go outside to set on the ground and watch the blasts when they knew the government would be testing that day. In the video.... that musta been a really small nuke. If you read the account of Hiroshima..... that too was an air burst above the city. Nothing remained standing for miles. The heat from the blast incinerated people and horses instantly, sometimes their silhouette on a wall was all that was left to show they were there. The eyes of Japanese soldiers outside of the city who watched the blast, melted in their heads. Thousands died from the flash burns..... It was on a missile as well.... back in the day, they did not have the technology to make powerful nukes to ride on missiles. They dropped them from planes and the planes immediately turned and high-tailed it out of the area. No, that blast in the video had to be extremely small.

It was small and it was high up. Definitely NOT detonated at the height for maximum damage. I've got the footage, they were all standing together and smiling with a sign that said "Ground Zero." This was one of the most bizarre I think:

craigb They (the U.S.) "only" shot off about 1,000 nukes... What harm could that cause? The military carefully measured the brain function of all the volunteers before and after the event. There was not found to be any discernable difference. Science then can re-assure everyone that they are absolutely harmless.

They dropped them from planes and the planes immediately turned and high-tailed it out of the area. No, that blast in the video had to be extremely small. As far as nukes go it was tiny at 2 kilotons (2000 tons of tnt). You notice this was a single small(ish) interceptor plane firing just one missile. (The second plane looks like an RB-57 which would have been used for taking atmospheric measurements only) Consider that as 4,000,000 lbs of convential bombs which would be roughly the total payload of an entire RAF 1000 bomber night raid over Germany during World War II. So extremely small is certainly a relative term. Multiply that explosions destrutive power by 10,000 times to get your average workaday strategic weapon of 20 megatons...

Yeah... I'd do it. How exciting. Maybe they would let me push the button! J
