What really are "lossless" files

I am going to upload some songs to the Hello Music site and they encourage / support "lossless" WAV files, AIFF, etc. I have seen this term before but never really found out what it meant and if I have to render a WAV file any different or are they already "lossless"????

THanks

Simply put it means none of the original data is lost from the original recording, unlike say an mp3 which is a 'lossy' format where some of the data is lost in a compromise between sound quality and a web friendly file size.

A standard WAV file is a lossless uncompressed format and doesn't require special rendering a cd quality WAV being 16 bit 44,100 khz format.

A compressed lossless format e.g. Flac is a format which is compressed to reduce file size but the full and complete data should be restored completely by the decoder at play back time.

ps - do you suggest that I compress my WAV files to send to them, or just upload it as is?
