What the Fudge is that NOISE??????
Hey all... Summer is officially done here in NY, and the summer gigs are DONE. Cannot say I am unhappy. Now it is time to play around and record again. But there is a problem: No matter how I hook it up, my PC is generation a hideous, awful digital whirring sound. I am using a PC laptop, Dell, which turned 4 years old this week. Hooked up, via USB, to a Lexicon Alpha, which has a Behringer board going in. The sound is steady and maddening. So, I plugged in an rca cable into the 1/8" stereo jack. Same noise. Note that if I hook up headphones to the PC, it sounds fine. Any suggestions, except get a new machine? Thanks. Mike

you're talking about 2 different soundcards, tho, when you say you plug headphones into the PC. that' your onboard soundcard and the lexicon alpha is a separate soundcard. what happens if you plug your headphones directly into the alpha? what happens if you remove the behringer from the signal path?

Beagle to the rescue, again. You're like a forum superhero. The noise occurs when the Alpha is connected, via USB, to the PC, but it also did it when I plugged in the 1/8" stereo and ran the line, with RCA connections, to the Behringer.

Yes. I did. The Alpha was connected to the PC via USB. Had the 1/4" outs for channels 3 and 4 from Behringer back to the Alpha for monitoring.

I am thinking maybe the same thing. disconnect the behringer completely - connect your alpha up via USB only and play back a project in MC. do you get the sound if you just simply play a project (no recording/no monitoring) going directly to the alpha without the behringer in the signal path? if not, reconnect it, but use the wiring diagram that RobertB made. it's on my website. (and thanks for the kudos!)
