What to get?

I've been gone since 2007. I still have all my software for windows Xp. I don't have a computer, what should I get? I might be happy to still use all my old software and Xp. What is this place anyway, posts about being boring and no content? I've been in federal prison for the past 7 years I'm sure I could tell some stories, but not sure that they'd be about music. Anyway, everything is new to me, what did I miss??

Funny, I've had that avitar sitting here since 07 before I left. It was the year Memphis went to the national championship game, and Derrick rose blew it. That pic came out before, wait no, we were ranked number one in the nation at the time going into march madness. Who is bapu??

I'd be throwing away a lot if I did that, I have a whole bunch of stuff here, everything NI, waves, sound forge, sonar, ivory, the list goes on, I can't afford now to replace all that. It worked fine then, what is so much better about what's out now?

You can try to get Windows 7 but Windows 8 and 8.11 whatever it is has been out.
I still rather use  XP even if 32-bit, because they changed things around in Windows Vista and onwards.
No more volume changing in Windows, it is set by Windows OS, plus other Security features that have to be probably turned off, or else they are well, to me annoying.

Anything else might be found here:
http://lunaticoutpost.com/
or perhaps here if you eventually join:
http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/pg1

and probably it is best to avoid some of those websites.
Music-wise sometimes it has been compression and loudness and loudness Wars.
I am not into that, so a lot can be read here also on this forum
I am using an older version of Sonar that works in XP or Windows 7, that is all I know.
Whether I upgrade or not depends on the factors inherent in what is going on in this Country.
?????
Otherwise the Coffee House here is like perhaps Garbage in Garbage Out.
but not all the time.

Correction:
I have my own family.

Re: What to get? 2014/07/11 13:35:35 (permalink)
You can still use Windows XP and it will work as well as it ever did. The reason to go with new stuff is to get new features, not because old stuff will not work. Most contemporary computers will run XP, but if you are not going for the latest and greatest, the used computer market will still have a lot of machines that have not been trashed yet, and some will have XP installed , but since XP has reached end of service, it is best to find an installation CD, since you will more or less be responsible for your own maintenance. Windows 7 Professional comes with a license to install XP as a virtual machine, but a VM is generally not recommended for audio work. Some (maybe all) of your software may still run under windows 7 or 8. And of course the world of malware has advanced, so if you are using XP it might be best to install a good antivirus and/or avoid surfing the web.

I have xp pro on cd, and would install myself, and tweak it to death as so that everything I don't need is off in the bg. And I've never hooked a daw (do they still say daw?) up to the net.

I put my music up yesterday in the songs forum and it's already bumped to the next page wo comment, maybe I didn't know what I was doing and should just start from scratch 😝

I was in Illinois and Oklahoma but yeah, back in memfrica now. I'm on a phone right now. It's strange. I'm still in 2007, but there is all this new stuff, and TVs are cheap, gas is expensive, and radio is dead. Odd.

I was about to say that XP is dead and then some.

Do not go under W7 ... and make sure it is 64bit. W8 64bit is fine too, but it appears there are some places where there are driver issues. I'm not the best one to ask about that side of things.

I recommend only using the PRO versions of Windows ... for one reason. They are not designed for home use and their abuse of your connection under what you are doing is quite a bit less than the home version of the software. If you are serious about music, then PRO is what you have to use, and I will not even consider anything that is not 64bit, ANYWAY!

But I'm a geek ... and still paly a little WoWarcraft, and my big box is a big BBBIIIGGG box that can handle music from here to Siberia and back via Bapu's!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
